The Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição () is a former convent situated in the freguesia (Portugal), civil parish of Sé (Angra do Heroísmo), Sé, in the historic centre of the Concelho, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. History The ''Gracianos'' were initially installed at the site, establishing a Hermitage (religious retreat), hermitage around 1584, before moving on in 1607 to the more central location of Alto das Covas. Pedro Cardoso Machado, third nephew of Gonçalo Eanes, bought the land and buildings at the site for 160,000 Portuguese real, réis on 16 February. An emigrant from the Spanish West Indies, Machado wished to return to the island of Terceira and found a convent for his sister, Simoa da Anunciação, making her an abbess for life. Angra do Heroísmo (), or simply Angra, is a city and municipality on Terceira Island, Portugal, and one of the three capital cities of the Azores. Founded in 1478, Angra was historically the most important city in the Azores, as seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angra, Bishop of the Azores, government entities, and having previously served as the capital city of Portugal during the Liberal Wars.
