Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines (simply known as Continental) was a major airline in the United States that operated from 1934 until it merged with United Airlines in 2012. It had ownership interests and brand partnerships with several carriers. Continental started out as one of the smaller carriers in the United States, known for its limited operations under the regulated era that provided very fine, almost fancy, service against the larger majors in important point-to-point markets, the largest of which was Chicago/Los Angeles. However, deregulation in 1978 changed the competitive landscape and realities, as noted by Smithsonian Airline Historian R. E. G. Davies, "Unfortunately, the policies that had been successful for more than forty years under [Robert] Six's cavalier style of management were suddenly laid bare as the cold winds of airline deregulation changed all the rules—specifically, the balance between revenues and expenditures." Continental Airways
Continental Airways was a passenger charter airline based in Moscow, Russia. It was established in 1995 and operated out of Sheremetyevo International Airport. History The airline was founded in 1995 as a cargo airline operating three Tupolev Tu-154s. Its initial base was Vnukovo International Airport. In 2000, it acquired three Ilyushin Il-76TDs to increase the number of routes it flew and add more destinations. In 2004, they acquired an additional four Tu-154s to start their passenger service, which would make its first flight in 2005. After facing financial problems for two years, selling several Il-76s and suspending most of their destinations, the Russian Air Safety Agency revoked Continental's permission to fly on July 29, 2011. The next day, the airline declared bankruptcy, thus ceasing all its operations. Frank Lorenzo
Francisco Anthony "Frank" Lorenzo (born May 19, 1940) is an American businessman. He managed Continental Airlines and Texas International Airlines between 1972 and 1990, through airline deregulation. Lorenzo also led the creation and management of the holding company for the group, Texas Air Corporation, through which New York Air was formed in 1980 and Eastern Air Lines was acquired in 1986, as well as Frontier Airlines and People Express Airlines. As an airline manager, Lorenzo earned a reputation for low fares and cost cutting, as well as union busting, as he and other airline managers pursued an affordable business model for the newly deregulated aviation era. Walter Varney
Walter Thomas Varney (December 26, 1888 – January 25, 1967) which combined under United Continental Holdings in 2010, long after his death in 1967. Varney was also one of the most prominent airmail contractors of the early 20th century. Varney served as a pilot in the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps during World War I. After the war Varney established an aviation school and air taxi service in northern California. Aviation career After finishing flight school in 1918, he purchased Lynch Field in Redwood City with the goal of starting a flying school and an air taxi service from San Francisco. Continental Lite was a short-lived subsidiary brand of Continental Airlines established in 1993. The airline folded in 1995 after losing what has been reported in the press as between $140 million and $300 million.
