Connor House (Rock Island, Illinois)
The Connor House is an historic building located in Rock Island, Illinois, United States. It was designated a Rock Island Landmark in 1987. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, and it was included as a contributing property in the Broadway Historic District in 1998. History It is thought that the house was built for industrialist Homer Lowery, and it is an early example of the Queen Anne style in the city. The house's brick construction was also an oddity in the area's other Queen Anne style homes. The house was extensively remodeled for Peter Fries’ daughter's wedding in 1906. The home was later owned by the Conner family and since 1944 by the Parker family. Architecture Davenport, Iowa architect E.S. Hammatt designed the house. He was also the architect for Lincoln School in Rock Island, as well as Kemper Hall and several additions made to St. Katherine's Hall in Davenport. Rock Island is a city in and the county seat of Rock Island County, Illinois, United States. The original Rock Island, from which the city name is derived, is now called Arsenal Island. The population was 37,108 at the 2020 census. Located on the Mississippi River, it is one of the Quad Cities, along with neighboring Moline, East Moline, and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement.
