Comporté River
The Comporté River is a tributary of the Malbaie River flowing generally southward into the territory of the town of La Malbaie in the Eastern part of the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality, in Quebec, in Canada. This river has a gap in elevation of . After several series of rapids, waterfalls and falls in forest area, it flows into the Malbaie River between the village of Clermont and the town of La Malbaie. The small valley of the Comporté River is served primarily on the west side of the river by Fraser Falls Road (west side of the river), and on the east side by Rang Sainte-Julie Road, "chemin des loisirs" and the Road Grands-Fonds. Great-Walls, and some other secondary forest roads, for forestry and recreation purposes. Some trails lead north into the Zec du Lac-au-Sable up to "Lac au Plongeon". Quebec Route 138
Route 138 is a major highway in the Canadian province of Quebec, following the entire north shore of the St. Lawrence River past Montreal to the temporary eastern terminus in Kegashka on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The western terminus is in Elgin, at the border with New York State south-west of Montreal (connecting with New York State Route 30 at the Trout River Border Crossing). Carignan-Salières Regiment
The Carignan-Salières Regiment was a 17th-century French military unit formed by the merging of two other regiments in 1659. Approximately 1,100 men from the regiment were sent to New France in 1665 to deal with the threat of the Iroquois to the colony. While in New France they were under the command of the Lieutenant Général of the Americas, Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy; the Governor General of New France, Governor General, Daniel de Rémy de Courcelle; and their colonel, Henri de Chastelard de Salières. The regiment constructed fortifications along the Richelieu River, and took part in three expeditions against the Iroquois in 1666. A peace settlement was reached the following year. Roughly 400 officers and soldiers remained behind in New France as settlers when the regiment returned to France in 1668. Philippe Gaultier De Comporté
Philippe Gaultier de Comporté (1641-1687) performed the roles of French soldier in France and in the French colony in America in the Carignan-Salières Regiment, of attendant (appointed in 1970 by the intendant of Boutroue) to the receipts of the right raised on the goods arriving at the country, of personal prosecutor of the intendant Jean Talon, of lord (lordship Comporté and La Malbaie), commissioner of the king's stores (1672-1678), commissioner of the navy (in 1685 provisionally) and provost of the ''Maréchaussée'' (1677). Born into a noble family, Philippe Gaultier (son of Philippe Gaultier, sieur of Rinault, and Gillette de Vernon) was born in 1641 in Comporté, near Poitiers, in France. La Malbaie
La Malbaie () is a municipality in the Charlevoix-Est Regional County Municipality in the Province of Quebec, Canada, situated on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at the mouth of the Malbaie River. It was formerly known as Murray Bay. La Malbaie is the seat of the judicial district of Charlevoix. Although the main business district is located at the mouth of the Malbaie River, the town itself covers a vast area that extends inland along both sides of the Malbaie River and north and south along the St. Lawrence River. Clermont, Capitale-Nationale, Quebec
Clermont () is a ''ville'' in the Canadian province of Quebec, and the seat of government for the Charlevoix-Est Regional County Municipality. It is located on the southern banks of the Malbaie River. History Around 1800, the first settlers moved into the area, living primarily of agriculture. Followed by a saw and flour mill, tradeshops, and stores, a settlement grew that was then known as Chute Nairne. At the close of the century, the place attracted attention for its hydro-electric potential, and by 1900, a dam was built across the Malbaie River, supplying electricity to La Malbaie and surrounding area.
