Commonwealth Boxing Council
The Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) is a governing body that sanctions professional boxing bouts for territories within the Commonwealth, and is an affiliate of the WBC. History The Commonwealth Boxing Council first started in 1954 as the Empire and Commonwealth Championships Committee, formed by the British Boxing Board of Control, to officially award a Commonwealth title. Before its formation, boxers from select territories within the British Empire fought for the 'Empire title', the first of such titles being awarded to British featherweight champion Jim Driscoll in 1908 after defeating Australian Charlie Griffin on points. In 1972, the Empire and Commonwealth Championships Committee was re-organised as the 'Commonwealth Championships Committee'. In 1997 the organisation was incorporated as a separate entity from the British Boxing Board of Control and renamed the Commonwealth Boxing Council. Sam Noakes (born 20 July 1997) is an English professional boxer who holds the British and Commonwealth lightweight titles. He is also a former European lightweight champion. Career After an amateur career boxing out of Westree ABC which included winning the England Boxing National Amateur Championships light-welterweight title, Noakes turned professional in July 2019 signing a four-year contract with Frank Warren's Queensbury Promotions. His first pro fight was on 27 September 2019 at the Royal Albert Hall in London when he won via stoppage after opponent Chris Adaway quit on his stool before the final round. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 Ibs. Constantin Ursu (born 8 March 2000) is a Moldovan professional boxer. Based in England, he has been the Commonwealth welterweight champion since 30 March 2025. Sam Gilley (born 19 August 1994) is an English professional boxer who has held the Commonwealth super-welterweight title since 21 October 2023. He is also a former English champion in the same weight division. Career Gilley became English super-welterweight champion in 2021 and made two successful defenses of the title. He challenged Commonwealth super-welterweight champion Louis Greene at York Hall in London on 21 October 2023. Gilley forced his opponent to take a knee following a heavy punch to his body in the fifth round and went on to win the fight by unanimous decision.
