Coma Star Cluster
The Coma Star Cluster (also known as Melotte 111 or Collinder 256) is a small but nearby open cluster located in the constellation Coma Berenices. The cluster contains about 40 brighter stars (between magnitudes 5 and 10) with a common proper motion. The brighter stars of the cluster make out a distinctive "V" shape as seen when Coma Berenices is rising. The cluster used to represent the tail of Leo. However, in around 240 BC, Ptolemy III renamed it for the Egyptian queen Berenice's legendary sacrifice of her hair. The ''Hipparcos'' satellite and infrared color-magnitude diagram fitting have been used to establish a distance to the cluster's center of approximately . The distance established via the independent analyses agree, thereby making the cluster an important rung on the cosmic distance ladder. Donald Pettit
Donald Roy Pettit (born April 20, 1955) is an American astronaut and chemical engineer. He is a veteran of two long-duration stays aboard the International Space Station, one Space Shuttle mission and a six-week expedition to find meteorites in Antarctica. As of 2022, at age 67, he is NASA's oldest active astronaut. Early life and education Pettit was raised in Silverton, Oregon, and is an Eagle Scout. He is married to Micki Pettit and has twin sons. Pettit earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State University in 1978, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1983. NASA career Pettit worked as a scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory until 1996 when he was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. 31 Comae Berenices
31 Comae Berenices (31 Com) is a yellow giant star in the constellation Coma Berenices. Its apparent magnitude is about 4.9 and slightly variable. It is a rare FK Comae Berenices variable, a variable star that spins rapidly and has large starspots on its surface. It is currently in the Hertzsprung gap and its outer envelope has just begun convection. In 1989 it was given as a spectral standard for the class G0IIIp. 31 Com is the north galactic pole star, and occasionally goes by the informal name Polaris Galacticum Borealis, coined by Jim Kaler. The Alpha Persei Cluster, also known as Melotte 20 or Collinder 39, is an open cluster of stars in the northern constellation of Perseus. To the naked eye, the cluster consists of several blue-hued spectral type B stars. The most luminous member is the ~2nd magnitude white-yellow supergiant Mirfak, also known as Alpha Persei. Bright members also include Delta, Sigma, Psi, 29, 30, 34, and 48 Persei. 21 Comae Berenices is a variable star in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices. It has the variable star designation UU Comae Berenices, while 21 Comae Berenices is the Flamsteed designation. 17 Comae Berenices (17 Com) is a multiple star system in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices. The brighter component, 17 Com A, is a naked eye star with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.2. It has a faint companion of magnitude 6.6, 17 Com B, positioned at an angular separation of along a position angle of 251°, as of 2018. They are located at a distance of approximately 240 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements. The double nature of this system was documented by F. G. W. Struve in 1836. The pair share a common proper motion through space and thus may be associated. Component B is itself a binary star system, although only the brighter component is visible in the spectrum.
