''The Colorado Independent'' was a nonprofit media organization, first reporting news via its online website that was started in July 2006, later revitalized again in September 2013 under new Colorado-based management. History ''The Colorado Independent,'' first called ''Colorado Confidential,'' was founded as part of a network of local state-based websites that covered regional news, focusing on local government and politics. The network of sites was run by the Washington, D.C.–based Center for Independent Media, later called the American Independent News Network. AINN began to shut down its websites in the spring of 2013 due to funding issues. American Independent News Network
The American Independent is a pseudo-news organization funded by Democratic Party political action committees. According to the organization, its aim is to support journalism which exposes "the nexus of conservative power in Washington." The current institute, started by David Brock in 2014, is a relaunch of the former state-based digital news-gathering network known as the American Independent News Network. As of 2024, the American Independent had state level affiliates in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Its outlets microtarget ideologically moderate and progressive female voters, seeking to sway them to vote for Democrats. The American Independent is run in concert with American Bridge 21st Century, the largest Democratic Party opposition research group. The American Independent does not disclose its donors. Ownership The ''Post'' was the flagship newspaper of MediaNews Group, MediaNews Group Inc., founded in 1983 by William Dean Singleton and Richard Scudder. On December 1, 1987, MediaNews, a national newspaper chain with over 60 daily newspapers and over 160 non-daily publications in 13 states, bought ''The Denver Post'' from Times Mirror Company. Rocky Mountain News
The ''Rocky Mountain News'' (nicknamed the ''Rocky'') was a daily newspaper published in Denver, Colorado, from April 23, 1859, until February 27, 2009. It was owned by the E. W. Scripps Company from 1926 until its closing. the Monday–Friday circulation was 255,427. From the 1940s until 2009, the newspaper was printed in a tabloid format. Under the leadership of president, publisher, and editor John Temple, the ''Rocky Mountain News'' had won four Pulitzer Prizes since 2000. Most recently in 2006, the newspaper won two Pulitzers, in Feature Writing and Feature Photography. The paper's final issue appeared on Friday, February 27, 2009, less than two months shy of its 150th anniversary. Mike Keefe
Mike Keefe (born November 6, 1946, in Santa Rosa, California) is an American editorial cartoonist best known for his work at ''The Denver Post'', for which he drew cartoons from 1975 to 2011. His cartoons are nationally syndicated, and have appeared in hundreds of newspapers as well as in Europe, Asia, and most major U.S. news magazines. He currently draws cartoons for The Colorado Independent. He won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. A former mathematician and automobile assembly line worker, Keefe was educated at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and attended Stanford University on a journalism fellowship. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. Keefe was a juror for the 1997 and 1998 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism.
