Colombia At The Paralympics
Colombia made its Paralympic Games début at the 1976 Summer Paralympics in Toronto, with competitors taking part in track and field, table tennis and wheelchair basketball. The country has participated in every subsequent edition of the Summer Paralympics, except 1984, but has never entered the Winter Paralympics. Colombians have won a total of forty seven medals at the Paralympic Games: six gold, fifteen silver and twenty six bronze. Pedro Mejía won the country's first medals when he took a gold and a bronze in swimming in 1980. His winning time of 1:27.88 in the final of the 100m breaststroke, D category, set a new world record. Colombia had to wait 28 years for its next two medals, which both came in the 2008 Games. Elkin Serna ran the men's marathon in 2:31:16 in the T12 category for athletes with severe visual disability, finishing less than a minute behind Chinese athlete Qi Shun's world record time of 2:30:32, and took silver. The Colombian Paralympic Committee (CPC; es, Comité Paralímpico Colombiano – CPC) is a private, non-profit organization representing the Colombian Paralympic athletes in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Parapan American Games and the South American Para Games. It's the governing body of the Colombian Paralympic sport; it represents 15 member sports organizations. Mission The Colombian Paralympic Committee is the entity that promotes the formulation and implementation of the public policy of sport recreation, and sports rehabilitation within the Colombian Paralympic System. The 1988 Summer Paralympics () were the first Paralympics in 24 years to take place in the same city as the 1988 Summer Olympics, Olympic Games. They took place in Seoul, South Korea. This was the first time the term "Paralympic" was used officially. Bidding process During the fourth meeting of the International Paralympic Committee held at the Aylesbury Civic Center in England (28 July 1983), two candidate cities made themselves known; * Seoul, South Korea, under the initiative of Whang Youn Dai, Dr. Whang Youn Dai * Melbourne, Australia, under the initiative of John Grant (neurosurgeon), Dr. John Grant The ICC sent to both cities a questionnaire in order to gauge both cities' interest, as well as their preparedness for hosting such an event, with both candidates given one year to respond.
