Origins of Cole Harbour, Guysborough County The first known name for Cole Harbour was Wonpaak, meaning "place of still water" in Mi'kmaq. While it is uncertain when or for whom it was named, Cole Harbour was first settled in 1817 by George Tanner and William West. George Tanner of Lunenburg married widow Mary (Rhynold) Myers of Peas Brook on December 5, 1814 and moved to Cole Harbour in 1817 where they were later joined by her sisters Ann (Mrs. James Harrington) and Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis Uloth). Guysborough, Nova Scotia
Guysborough, officially the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, is a Canadian district municipality in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. First inhabited by the Mi'kmaq, The area was colonized by France in the 17th century. Large numbers of loyalists settled in the area after the American Revolutionary War. The Municipality was created in 1879 when the administration of Guysborough County was divided between Guysborough and St. Mary's. Canso was incorporated as a town in 1901, but dissolved and rejoined the municipality in 2012. The municipal office is located in Guysborough. History The area was originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq, who had seasonal settlements on the coast of Chedabucto Bay at Cooks Cove and Canso.
