Coker, Texas
Coker was a community located in north central Bexar County, Texas (USA) near Hill Country Village, along Loop 1604 . History The Coker Community was founded in 1841 by John Coker (1789–1851) on of land he had been awarded for his service in the Texas revolutionary war. James Harrison Coker (1827–1892), son of Joseph Coker, John Coker's brother, was the first teacher at the Coker School, and his daughter Sarah Jane Coker (1860–1930) was the midwife there. Sarah Jane was married to Zachary Taylor Autry who was a Texas Ranger and early settler of Northern Bexar County, Texas. A family member can be found under the name of Andie Coker, currently residing in Round Rock, Texas. Bexar County ( or ; es, Béxar ) is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is San Antonio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,009,324. Bexar County is included in the San Antonio– New Braunfels, TX metropolitan statistical area. It is the 16th-most populous county in the nation and the fourth-most populated in Texas. Hill Country Village is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. The population was 985 at the 2010 census. It is an enclave of San Antonio and is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the 7th wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income. Texas State Highway Loop 1604
Loop 1604 is the outer highway loop encircling San Antonio, Texas, spanning approximately . Originally constructed as a two-lane highway, the northern segment of the route, from US 90 in western San Antonio to Kitty Hawk Road in northeastern Bexar County, has been upgraded to a four-lane freeway. Loop 1604 is designated the Charles W. Anderson Loop in honor of former Bexar County Judge Charles W. Anderson, who died from cancer in 1964 after serving for 25 years. Route description Loop 1604 forms a complete loop around the city of San Antonio and is the outer of two loops around the city with I-410 being the inner loop. The route has portions that are built to freeway standards, portions built as a divided highway, and portions that are just a two-lane rural road. John Coker (soldier)
John Coker (1789–1851) was a soldier in the Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, noted for a daring action during the Battle of San Jacinto that helped seal the decisive Texian victory. Early life John Coker was born in Laurens County, South Carolina. Military service Deaf Smith knew more about the lay of the land in and around the San Jacinto battle grounds than any man in Sam Houston's army. So when he went to Houston and told him of Coker’s idea that unless the bridge over Vince's Bayou was burned, the enemy could keep on getting reinforcements and, if defeated, Santa Anna would cross the bridge and escape to wait for those reinforcements and come back. Houston agreed with this plan, but said, "You will have to pass within of the Mexican cavalry and they will cut you to pieces."
