1845 Royal Canal Disaster
The Royal Canal disaster of 1845 occurred on the evening of 25 November 1845 along the Royal Canal near Clonsilla, County Dublin, Republic of Ireland, Ireland when the night boat ''Longford'', on its way from Dublin to the eponymous town of Longford, was accidentally steered into the river bank, bank of the canal, forcing it to tip over enough that it began to take on water, and sank. Overloading of the boat, and the rocky nature of the canal bank in which the incident occurred may have contributed to the sinking due to the weight of passengers shifting unexpectedly as the bow hit a solid obstacle. Of the 54 people onboard at the time of the accident, 15 died. Background Construction on the Royal Canal began in May 1790 and concluded in 1817 when it successfully joined Dublin with the River Shannon at Cloondara, County Longford. Castleknock (barony)
The barony of Castleknock ( meaning "Cnucha's Castle") is one of the Barony (Ireland), baronies of Ireland. Originally part of the Lordship of Meath, it was then constituted as part of County Dublin. Today, it is in the modern Counties of Ireland, county of Fingal, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The barony was originally also a feudal title, which became one of the subsidiary titles of the Viscounts Gormanston. History The barony was created by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, as his own feudal barony, to be held directly from himself (his vassals were commonly called "De Lacy's Barons"). Ongar is a western suburb of Dublin, Ireland. Developed on a greenfield basis since 2001, it comprises the townlands of Castaheany (northerly) and "Hansfield or Phibblestown" (southerly), within the ancient Barony of Castleknock, County Dublin. It is close to Castleknock, Blanchardstown and Clonsilla. Luttrellstown Castle
Luttrellstown Castle is a castellated house located in Clonsilla on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland dating from the early 15th century (c. 1420). The Royal Canal () is a canal originally built for freight and passenger transportation from Dublin to Longford in Ireland. It is one of two canals from Dublin to the River Shannon and was built in direct competition to the Grand Canal.
