Cleveland is a town in central Russell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 128 at the 2010 census. History Jessees Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Geography Cleveland is located at (36.943674, -82.152334). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.1 square mile (0.4 km), of which 0.1 square mile (0.3 km) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km) (14.29%) is water. The 1288-acre Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve, within the Clinch River Valley, protects part of one of six top biodiversity hotspots in the United States. Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve
Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located within the Clinch River Valley in Russell County, Virginia. The preserve protects several dolomite barrens, a globally rare natural community. These areas are typically small, natural openings in otherwise forested landscapes, characterized by thin calcareous soils, dry conditions, and exposed bedrock including limestone or dolomite. At the Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve, four such barrens are found on steep, southwest-facing slopes; these barrens are dominated by various warm-season grasses, such as indiangrass, big bluestem, and little bluestem. Jessee’s Mill is a historic grist mill located near Cleveland, Russell County, Virginia. The original section was built about 1850, as a single pen log structure. About 1890, a two-story balloon frame addition was built on top of the old log structure. The mill retains much of its original milling equipment.
