Clementi, Singapore
Clementi ( , ) is a planning area and residential town located at the easternmost fringe of the West Region of Singapore. The town borders Bukit Batok to the north, Bukit Timah to the northeast, Queenstown to the east and Jurong East to the west. Etymology "Clementi" derives its name from 'Clementi Road', the main traffic route that still runs into the district to this day. It was once known as 'Reformatory Road' as there was a boys' home situated along the road. In 1947, the Singapore Rural Board discussed renaming the road. Their original intention was to name it after Sir Hugh Clifford, but it was eventually named as Clementi Road. It is generally suggested that the road was named after Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, who was the first British High Commissioner in the Straits Settlements. Tyler Clementi (December 19, 1991 – September 22, 2010) was an American student at Rutgers University–New Brunswick who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River on September 22, 2010, at the age of 18. On September 19, 2010, without Clementi's knowledge, his roommate, Dharun Ravi, used a webcam on his dorm room computer and his hallmate Molly Wei's computer to view Clementi kissing another man. Clementi found out after Ravi posted about the webcam incident on Twitter. Two days later, Ravi urged friends and Twitter followers to watch a second encounter between Clementi and his companion, though the viewing never occurred. Ravi and Wei were both indicted for their roles in the webcam incidents, though they were not charged with a role in the suicide itself. Muzio Clementi
Muzio Filippo Vincenzo Francesco Saverio Clementi (23 January 1752 – 10 March 1832) was an Italian-British composer, virtuoso pianist, pedagogue, conductor (music), conductor, music publisher, editor, and piano manufacturer, who was mostly active in England. Encouraged to study music by his father, he was sponsored as a young composer by Sir Peter Beckford (hunter), Peter Beckford who took him to England to advance his studies. Later, he toured Europe numerous times from his long-standing base in London. It was on one of these occasions, in 1781, that he engaged in a piano competition with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Clementi MRT station is an Elevated railway, elevated Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the East–West MRT line, East–West Line (EWL). Located in Clementi, Singapore, Clementi, Singapore, the station is located along Commonwealth Avenue West and serves landmarks such as the Clementi Mall, the Clementi Bus Interchange, and Clementi Fire Station. Built as part of Phase IA of the MRT system, the EWL station opened on 12 March 1988. An oil spill on the tracks led to Clementi rail incident, two trains colliding at the station on 5 August 1993. Richard Thomas Clementi (born March 31, 1977) is a former American mixed martial artist. Clementi has fought for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Bellator, K-1 Hero's DREAM, King of the Cage, and Titan FC. Background Clementi was born in Edison, New Jersey but moved frequently during his childhood along with his mother, as a result of her divorcing Clementi's stepfather. His passion from an early age was in wrestling but most of the schools that he attended did not have programs for the sport. Sir Cecil Clementi (; 1 September 1875 – 5 April 1947) was a British colonial administrator who served as Governor of Hong Kong from 1925 to 1930, and Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Straits Settlements from 1930 to 1934. Early life and education Born in Cawnpore (presently Kanpur), India, Clementi was the son of Colonel Montagu Clementi, Judge Advocate General in India, and his wife, Isabel Collard. He attended St Paul's School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied Sanskrit and the classics. In 1896, he achieved a first-class result in mods, and was awarded a Boden Scholarship in Sanskrit in 1897. Cecilia Clementi is an Italian-American scientist who specialises in the simulation of biomolecules. She is a Professor of Theoretical and Computational Biophysics at the Free University of Berlin. She was previously a Professor of Chemistry at the Rice University and co-director of the National Science Foundation Molecular Sciences Software Institute. From 2017 to 2019 she held an Einstein Foundation fellowship. Early life and education Clementi is from Italy. She studied physics at the University of Florence, where she earned her Laurea in 1995. Enrico Clementi (November 19, 1931 in Cembra, Italy - March 30, 2021) was an Italian chemist, a pioneer in computational techniques for quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics. Dr. Clementi received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Pavia, where he was a student in the Collegio Cairoli, in 1954 and joined IBM Research in 1961. At IBM he was first responsible for atomic calculations, then manager of a scientific computation department until 1974. As an IBM Fellow (elected 1969), he led research and development in parallel computer architecture and fundamental research in chemistry, biophysics and fluid dynamics. Aldo Clementi (25 May 1925 – 3 March 2011) was an Italian classical composer. Life Aldo Clementi was born in Catania, Italy. He studied the piano, graduating in 1946 at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome. His studies in composition began in 1941, and his teachers included and Goffredo Petrassi. After receiving his diploma in 1954 again at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia, he attended the Darmstadt summer courses from 1955 to 1962. Clementi Secondary School () is a secondary institution in Fortress Hill, North Point, Hong Kong. Founded by the 17th British governor of Hong Kong, Sir Cecil Clementi, the school was the first to use Chinese as the primary medium of instruction in Hong Kong. History Hong Kong governor Cecil Clementi had a profound interest in the Chinese language and decided to establish a school using Chinese as the main medium of instruction. In 1926, Government Vernacular Middle School (官立漢文中學) was founded. Government Vernacular Middle School was the first government school to use Chinese as the principal language of instruction.
