Cité Aline Sitoe Diatta is a neighborhood in west central Dakar, Senegal. Overview Formerly known as ''Cité Claudel'', after independence the area was named after Aline Sitoe Diatta, an anti-colonial leader from Casamance. Although the name has changed, many still refer to the area as Claudel or Fann. Cité Aline Sitoe Diatta is the home of Cheikh Anta Diop University, and consequently hosts a large, vibrant (and often crowded) student community. Just west of the prosperous Medina neighborhood and bordered by the ocean Corniche road and Point Fann, in the early 20th century, the area was military drill ground, called the "''Champ de Fann''", which later became a sports ground. Administratively, it is part of Dakar Plateau, the city center. Dakar ( ; ; ) is the capital city, capital and List of cities in Senegal, largest city of Senegal. The Departments of Senegal, department of Dakar has a population of 1,278,469, and the population of the Dakar metropolitan area was at 4.0 million in 2023. Aline Sitoe Diatta
Aline Sitoe Diatta (also Aline Sitow Diatta or Alyn Sytoe Jata; 1920 – 22 May 1944) was a Senegalese heroine of the opposition to the French colonial empire, and a strong young female symbol of resistance and liberty. A Jola leader of a local religious group living in the village of Kabrousse, Basse Casamance, Diatta was one of the leaders of a tax resistance movement during World War II. Biography Diatta was born in Kabrousse. She was orphaned and adopted by her uncle, Elubaliin Diatta. He died in a Ziguinchor jail a few years after adopting her. Diatta left the village of Kabrousse to work in Ziguinchor, later moving on to Dakar and making her residence in Médina. Jola resistance had continued since the region was annexed to French West Africa in 1914. In 1942 the French government began seizing as much as half the area's rice harvest for their war effort. Casamance
Casamance is the area of Senegal south of the Gambia, including the Casamance River. It consists of the Lower Casamance (, —i.e. Ziguinchor Region) and the Upper Casamance (, —i.e. Kolda and Sédhiou Regions). The largest city of Casamance is Ziguinchor. Etymology Because this southern region of Senegal boasts a coastline that was early visited by Portuguese navigators, there has long been speculation about a Lusophone influence in its name. In his Wolof-French Dictionary published in 1923 by the Catholic Mission of Dakar, Aloyse Kobès provides the following definition: "Kasamansa (Casamance), derived from (Portuguese), meaning house, dwelling, and ''mansa'' ( Mandingo), meaning king, chief." Cheikh Anta Diop University
Cheikh Anta Diop University (), also known as the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar, is a university in Dakar, Senegal. It is named after the Senegalese physicist, historian and anthropologist Cheikh Anta Diop and has an enrollment of over 60,000. History Cheikh Anta Diop University predates Senegalese independence and grew out of several French institutions set up by the colonial administration. In 1918, the French created the "école africaine de médecine" (African medical school), mostly to serve white and Métis students but also open to the small educated elite of the four free towns of Senegal with nominal French citizenship. Dakar-Plateau is an Arrondissements of Senegal, arrondissement in the Dakar Department, and forms the central district of the city of Dakar. Overview Senegalese arrondissements are quite different from the arrondissements of Paris, being merely local administrative structures of the central state, like the Senegalese ''départements'', and are thus more comparable to French arrondissement in France, departmental arrondissements. In 1996, a massive reform of the administrative and political divisions of Senegal was voted by the Parliament of Senegal.
