The City of Marion is a Local government in Australia, local government area in part of the southern and western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. The council offices are in the suburb of Sturt, South Australia, Sturt. History The District Council of Brighton was established in 1853, centred at the then rural village of Marion, South Australia, Marion (laid out in 1838) south west of Adelaide. The district council was renamed to District Council of Marion in 1886 to distinguish it from the adjacent City of Brighton, South Australia, Town of Brighton, the latter having been detached from the Brighton district council in 1858. In 1944 the district council was gazetted a municipality and thereafter known as the City of Marion, and its first mayor, Frederick Henson Trott, was elected. Sturt is a suburb of Adelaide in the City of Marion local government area. It was named after the explorer Captain Charles Sturt. Sturt is in the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Gibson and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby. Darlington, South Australia
Darlington is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia part of which is in the City of Onkaparinga and the City of Marion. For many years, Darlington was the southern entrance to Adelaide's urban area on Main South Road. It hosted many service stations of different brands. It represents the convergence of Flagstaff Road to Main South Road from the south, with Seacombe Road to the west, Diagonal Road to the northwest and Marion Road to the north with South Road continuing northeast. The new upgrades are taking place here and most are complete. In about 1851 the village of Darlington was created and named by Samuel William Lewis, the licensed victualler of the Flagstaff Inn, after the market town in County Durham in North East England named Darlington. Clovelly Park is an inner southern suburb of Adelaide in the Local government in Australia, local government area of the City of Marion. The suburb is bordered by Daws Road, Adelaide, Daws Road to the north, South Road, Adelaide, South Road to the east, Sturt Road to the south, and a combination of Percy Avenue and the Flinders railway line to the west. Ascot Park is a suburb in the south-western part of Adelaide in the City of Marion. It was named after Ascot Racecourse in England. Ascot Park is bordered in the west by Marion Road, to the north by Wood Street, in the east by Robert Street and West Street and to the south by the southernmost of Daws Road and the Seaford railway line. It is adjacent to Park Holme, Edwardstown, South Plympton and Mitchell Park. Felicity-Ann Lewis
Dr Felicity-Ann Lewis (born 1957) is a former mayor of the City of Marion and South Australia's Australian of the Year for 2014. She received a Centenary Medal for service to the community, particularly as Mayor, City of Marion. Lewis has worked towards reconciliation with Aboriginal people and was on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial Fundraising Committee. She has also worked to assist settlement for refugees and migrants. She received a Doctorate of Education from University of South Australia in August 2013 and is a retired senior lecturer in Health Education at Flinders University. Local government Lewis served four terms as mayor of Marion between 2000 and 2014. She was also National President of the Australian Local Government Association. The City of Charles Sturt is a local government area in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, stretching to the coast. The council was formed on 1 January 1997 as a result of the amalgamation of the City of Hindmarsh Woodville and the City of Henley and Grange. It comprises a mix of residential, industrial and commercial areas and had a population of 121,840 in 2021. History The first local government to be established in the area was the District Council of Hindmarsh (established in 1853), covering the north west suburbs of Adelaide south of the port and north of the Torrens.
