Citizen Soldier (TV Program)
''Citizen Soldier'' is a television program produced by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library. It airs on PBS channel WTTW. Each 26 minute episode of Citizen Soldier explores topics on military history, affairs and policy through interviews and panel discussions with scholars, military personnel, and authors. From exploring the military necessity of the Emancipation Proclamation with James McPherson to an alternative history of the Battle of Midway during World War II, this series seeks to educate the public about important aspects of history and policy. Production ''Citizen Soldier'' is created by Pritzker Military Museum and Library as part of the Library's mission to develop appropriate programs focusing on the Citizen Soldier in the preservation of democracy. Sir Max Hugh Macdonald Hastings (; born 28 December 1945) is a British journalist and military historian, who has worked as a foreign correspondent for the BBC, editor-in-chief of ''The Daily Telegraph'', and editor of the ''Evening Standard''. He is also the author of thirty books, most significantly histories, which have won several major awards. Stephanie Freid-Perenchio is an independent documentary photographer known for her work highlighting humanitarian causes and wartime. She is best known for her documentary work on the Navy SEALs, both in her publication ''SEAL: The Unspoken Sacrifice'' and subsequent work. Her work has been exhibited at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Work Perenchio, along with colleague Jennifer Walton, coauthored ''SEAL: The Unspoken Sacrifice'' in 2009. The book accounts and shows photographs of Navy SEALs operations during their training and service. Karl Marlantes
Karl Arthur Marlantes (born December 24, 1944) is an American author and Vietnam War veteran. He has written four books: '' Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War'' (2010), ''What It Is Like to Go to War'' (2011), ''Deep River'' (2019), and ''Cold Victory'' (2024). Biography Early life Marlantes grew up in Seaside, Oregon, a small, coastal logging town. He played football and was student body president at Seaside High School, from which he graduated in 1963. His father was the school principal. He won a National Merit Scholarship and attended Yale University, where he was a member of Jonathan Edwards College and Beta Theta Pi, and played as wing forward in the rugby team. Tim O'Brien (born October 1, 1946) is an American novelist who served as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Much of his writing is about wartime Vietnam, and his work later in life often explores the postwar lives of its veterans. O'Brien is perhaps best known for his book '' The Things They Carried'' (1990), a collection of linked semi-autobiographical stories inspired by his wartime experiences. In 2010, ''The New York Times'' described it as "a classic of contemporary war fiction." O'Brien wrote the war novel, '' Going After Cacciato'' (1978), which was awarded the National Book Award. William Manchester
William Raymond Manchester (April 1, 1922 – June 1, 2004) was an American author, biographer, and historian. He was the author of 18 books which have been translated into over 20 languages. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award. Early life and education Manchester was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I. After his father's death and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Manchester likewise enlisted in the Marine Corps. However, he was ordered back to college until called up. Initially, Manchester joined the Officer Candidate School but was dropped before receiving a commission.
