Sarel Cilliers
Charl (Sarel) Arnoldus Cilliers (7 September 1801 – 4 October 1871) was a Voortrekker leader and a preacher. With Andries Pretorius, he led the Boers to a huge victory over the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. In particular, Cilliers led the Voortrekkers in a vow which promised that if God would protect them and deliver the enemy into their hands, they would build a church and commemorate the day of their victory as if it were an annual Sabbath day, which their descendants would also be instructed to honour. He was a prominent member of the ''Gereformeerde Kerk'' (Reformed Church), an offshoot of the Dutch Reformed Church. He is described as being a short, stout man, and was believed to have been very religious. He joined the Great Trek at the age of thirty-five. The town of Kroonstad was, according to folklore, named after a horse belonging to Cilliers, which drowned in a stream (Kroonspruit) where the town is situated. Friedrich Paul Cilliers (25 December 1956 – 31 July 2011) was a South-African philosopher, complexity researcher, and Professor in Complexity and Philosophy at Stellenbosch University. He was known for his contributions in the field of complex systems. Biography Cilliers studied at Stellenbosch University from mid-1970s to 1994. There he received his BA in Electronic Engineering in 1980, his BA cum laude in Political Philosophy in 1987, and his MA cum laude in Philosophy in 1989. Eventually he received his PhD in 1994 from Stellenbosch University and Cambridge University under supervision of Johan Degenaar and Mary Hesse. Cilliers started his academic career at Stellenbosch University, where in 1993 he became a lecturer in philosophy. Since 2003 he was Professor of Complexity and Philosophy at Stellenbosch. Cecile Cilliers (May 24, 1933 – June 16, 2018) was an Afrikaans freelance journalist and writer. The writer Madeleine van Biljon is her sister. She is predominantly known for her essays, but also published among others a children's collection and a number of religious books. She was involved in the N.G. Kerk and was the first non-ministerial woman to be elected vice-chairperson of the Sinodal Committee. Charl Jean Francois Cilliers (also credited as ''Charles Cilliers'') (25 January 1941 to 16 July 2019) was a South African author and poet. His published works include "West-falling Light" (1971), "Has Winter No Wisdom" (1979). Early years and education Cilliers was born in Cape Town, and grew up in Free State. His primary school years were spent in a succession of different schools as the family moved around. He went to Clapham High School in Pretoria, where he matriculated in 1957. Cilliers lectured in telecommunications in the Post Office Training Centre in Pretoria until 1968 when he joined Parliament as a translator. He retired as Chief Editor of the Hansard Reporting Unit until in 1999. Ockert Cilliers (born 21 April 1981) is a South African 400 m hurdler. Born in Vanderbijlpark, Cilliers now lives in Sydney (Australia). He is 1.84 m tall and weighs 74 kg. His athletics career started in 1996 at school, where he also played rugby union. The rugby coach forced all players to take part in athletics as well.
