Ciarán Murphy
Ciarán Patrick Murphy (born 30 May 1940) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician who was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Wicklow from 1973 to 1982. A secondary school teacher before entering politics, Murphy was elected to Dáil Éireann on his first attempt, at the 1973 general election. He defeated the sitting TD Paudge Brennan, who had left Fianna Fáil over the Arms Crisis and was standing as a candidate for the short-lived breakaway party Aontacht Éireann. Murphy was re-elected at the next three general elections, before losing his seat at the November 1982 general election to Paudge Brennan, who had rejoined Fianna Fáil. In October 1982, Murphy had been one of the " Gang of 22" Fianna Fáil TDs who had voted in favour of a motion of no confidence in the Taoiseach Charles Haughey's leadership of the party. A Teachta Dála ( ; ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish language, Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas, the parliament of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The official English translation of the term is "Dáil Deputy". An equivalent position would be a Member of parliament, Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK or Member of Congress in the USA. Number of TDs Republic of Ireland, Ireland is divided into Dáil constituencies, each of which elects three, four, or five TDs. Under the Constitution of Ireland, Constitution, the total number of TDs must be fixed at one TD for each 20,000 to 30,000 of the population. Kildare (Dáil Constituency)
Kildare was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas from 1923 to 1937 and from 1948 to 1997. The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries Covering all or part of County Kildare, the constituency existed for two distinct periods: from 1923 to 1937, and from 1948 to 1997. From 1923 to 1937 Kildare elected 3 deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs), until it was absorbed into a new Carlow–Kildare constituency in 1937. After its re-establishment in 1948 it initially elected 3 TDs. This was increased to 4 seats in 1961, reduced again to 3 in 1969, and increased to 5 from 1981 until its abolition in 1997. Its boundaries were significantly revised on several occasions.
