Ciarán (storm)
Ciarán ( Irish spelling) or Ciaran (Scottish Gaelic spelling) is a traditionally male given name of Irish origin. It means "little dark one" or "little dark-haired one", produced by appending a diminutive suffix to ''ciar'' ("black", "dark"). It is the masculine version of the name Ciara. The name became common in reference to Ciar, son of Fergus mac Róich, who gave his name to the Ciarraige and County Kerry, and two early Irish saints both counted among the Twelve Apostles of Ireland: Ciarán the Elder and Ciarán the Younger. It is anglicised in various ways: Ciaran, Kieran, Keiran, Keiron, Keiren, Keerun, Kiran, etc. According to historian C. Thomas Cairney, the O'Kierans were the chiefly family of the Cíarraige tribe who in turn were from the Dumnonii or Laigin who were the third wave of Celts to settle in Ireland during the first century BC. Ciarán Of Clonmacnoise
Saint Ciarán of Clonmacnoise (c. 516 – c. 549), supposedly born Ciarán mac an tSaeir ("son of the carpenter"), was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland and the first abbot of Clonmacnoise. He is sometimes called Ciarán the Younger to distinguish him from the 5th-century Ciarán of Saighir, Saint Ciarán the Elder who was bishop of Ossory, bishop of Kingdom of Ossory, Osraige. His name produced many variant spellings, including Ceran, Kieran, Kyran, Queran and Queranus. Life Ciarán was born in around 516 in Ireland, 516 in County Roscommon, Connacht, in Ireland. His father was a carpenter and chariot maker. As a boy, Ciarán worked as a cattle herder. Ciarán Cuffe
Ciarán Cuffe (born 3 April 1963) is an Irish politician who has been co-chair of the European Green Party (EGP) since December 2024. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland for the Dublin constituency from July 2019 to July 2024. Cuffe is a member of the Irish Green Party, part of the EGP. Ciaran Clark (born 26 September 1989) is a professional footballer who plays for Baller League club Trebol FC. In eleven-a-side football, he operates as a centre-back, central midfielder or left-back. Clark is a product of the Aston Villa Academy and made 159 appearances for their senior side before transferring to Newcastle in 2016. Ciarán Carey
Ciarán Carey (born 16 January 1970) is an Irish former player, hurling manager and selector. Primarily playing at the centre-back position, Carey's club career was with Patrickswell and at inter-county level with Limerick. He was a key member of the latter team during the 1990s and collected two Munster titles, two National Hurling League titles and three All-Star awards. In retirement from playing Carey has become involved in team management and coaching. At club level he has taken charge of the Tournafulla and Granagh-Ballingarry sides in hurling and camogie respectively. Ciarán Cannon
Ciarán Cannon (born 19 September 1965) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway East constituency from 2011 to 2024. He previously served as a senator for the Progressive Democrats and was the last elected leader of that party. He served as a Minister of State from 2011 to 2014 and again from 2017 to 2020. Ciarán Byrne (born 6 December 1994) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for the St Mochta's club at senior level for the Louth county team. Ciarán Bourke
Ciarán Bourke (18 February 1935 – 10 May 1988) was an Irish musician and one of the original founding members of the Irish folk band The Dubliners. Early life Ciarán Bourke was born in Dublin on 18 February 1935, but lived most of his life in Tibradden, County Dublin. His father, a doctor, was in practice in the city. The children had an Irish-speaking nanny. Ciarán's early exposure to Irish continued throughout his education, attending Colaiste Mhuire, Parnell Square, Dublin. Ciarán Bairéad
Ciarán Bairéad (1905–1976) was an Irish folklorist, scribe and scholar. Ciarán Bairéad was born into a native Irish speaking family in Dublin on 17 February 1905. His parents were Siobhán Ní Mhurchú and Stiofán Bairéad (1867-1921), the first treasurer of Conradh na Gaeilge. Ciáran Bairéad came to Galway in the mid-1950s working with the Irish Folklore Commission and An Fáinne, an organisation which promoted Irish. Among his works was the transcriptions of ''Leabhar na nAmhrán'', a duanaire of folksongs by Pádhraic Ó Comáin. It is especially valuable as the original appears to be misplaced. In addition he wrote detailed biographies of the lives and works of other scholars in the Gaelic Revival such as Seosamh Laoide.
