Chéché
Chéché or Ché Ché is a village in the Gabú Region of north-eastern Guinea-Bissau. It lies on the south of the Corubal River, to the south of Canjadude. The river crossing was the site of the Cheche Disaster of 6 February 1969, in which about 50 Portuguese soldiers drowned in an accident when their ferry tipped over. Cheche Disaster
The Cheche Disaster (Portuguese: ''Desastre do Cheche'') was an incident during the Portuguese Colonial War in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) in which almost fifty Portuguese soldiers died on 6 February 1969 while crossing the Corubal River. Background When Brigadier António de Spínola came to Guinea in 1968 as Governor and Commander in Chief, he decided to evacuate the Portuguese army, Portuguese troops in the east of the country, which was thinly populated and of no strategic value. The camp at Madina do Boé was surrounded and was suffering constant attacks by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, PAIGC guerillas of Amílcar Cabral. The position was untenable. It was occupied by PAIGC forces the same day that the Portuguese evacuated it. Gabú Region
Gabú region is the easternmost region in Guinea-Bissau. Its capital is Gabú. The region borders Senegal to the north, Guinea to the east and south and the Guinea-Bissau regions of Tombali Region, Tombali and Bafatá Region, Bafatá to the west. It covers an area of 9,150 km2, making it the largest of Guinea-Bissau's administrative regions. It is an inland region covered with savannah or light savannah woodland and receives an annual rainfall of more than . Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is a country in West Africa that covers with an estimated population of 2,026,778. Corubal River
The Corubal, also known as the Rio Corubal or Tomine, is a river of West Africa, a major tributary of the Geba River. For a short distance, it forms the international border between Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. It has a length of approximately . History During the Portuguese Colonial War in February 1969, the Portuguese army, while retreating from territories in the Madina do Boe sector, lost 47 soldiers to drowning when their overloaded raft tipped to a side while crossing the Corubal. Canjadude
Canjadude is a village in the Gabú sector of the Gabú Region in north-eastern Guinea-Bissau. It lies to the south of Uelíngarà. Canjadude, along with Catió Catió is a city in south-western Guinea-Bissau. It is the capital of Tombali Region. Population 9,217 (2008 est).
