''Survivor: Vanuatu — Islands of Fire'', also known as ''Survivor: Vanuatu'', is the ninth season of the American CBS competitive reality television series ''Survivor (American TV series), Survivor''. The season was filmed from June 28, 2004, through August 5, 2004, and the season premiered on September 16, 2004. Filming took place in Vanuatu, a chain of volcanic islands in the Oceania, South Pacific. Hosted by Jeff Probst, it consisted of the usual 39 days of gameplay, with 18 competitors for the second time in the series' history. This was the second season to initially divide the tribes by gender following ''Survivor: The Amazon''. Chris Daugherty was named the winner and Sole Survivor after defeating runner-up Twila Tanner by a jury vote of 5–2. Jeffrey Lee Probst (; born November 4, 1961) is an American television presenter and producer and young adult fiction writer. He is best known as the Emmy Awards, Emmy Award–winning host of the American version of the reality television show ''Survivor (American TV series), Survivor'' since 2000. He was also the host of ''The Jeff Probst Show'', a Broadcast syndication, syndicated daytime talk show produced by CBS Media Ventures, CBS Television Distribution from September 2012 to May 2013. Early life Probst was born at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, the oldest of three sons to Jerry and Barbara Probst. His family moved to Bellevue, Washington, when Probst was 15 years old.
