CLS Strategies, formerly known as Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter and Associates, is a lobbying and public relations firm based in Washington DC. Established in 1993 by Robert Chlopak, Charlie Leonard, and Peter Schechter, the firm has a diverse client portfolio, representing entities ranging from Fortune 500 companies like Oracle Corp. and Verizon Communications to various foreign governments such as Brazil, Colombia, and Nicaragua. The firm re-branded as CLS Strategies in 2014. CLS Strategies has faced scrutiny for its involvement in advising electoral candidates in Latin America and providing strategic counsel to governments during political upheavals. In October 2009, a protest was held outside of their Washington DC office due to their representation of what was then referred to as the de-facto government of Honduras after the coup d'etat. Peter Schechter
Peter Schechter (born 1959) is an American political consultant and the executive producer and host of Altamar, a foreign policy podcast. Until June 2017, he was the Atlantic Council's Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and the founding director of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center, a Washington-based think tank launched in October 2013 to study the trends transforming Latin America. Born in 1959 in Rome, Schechter first came to the US when he was 16, then spent several years in Bolivia and Venezuela before returning to the US to settle in Washington. He has a Master's from the Johns Hopkins’ Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies. He is fluent in six languages.
