Chinatown, Detroit
Detroit has had at least two locations that were once called "Chinatown", with the first being in a downtown location at Third Avenue, Porter St and Bagley St, now the permanent site of the MGM Grand Casino and Interstate 75's Fisher Freeway. In the 1960s urban renewal efforts facilitated its move to Cass Avenue and Peterboro, which was also an opportunity for the Chinese business community to finally purchase property. Much of the Metro Detroit Chinese community live in the Troy area; other Asians such as Koreans also are in great number there. As of 2023, revitalization efforts have been under way for a revival of Detroit's Chinatown. MGM Grand Detroit
The MGM Grand Detroit is one of three casino resort hotels in Detroit, Michigan, and one of four in the Detroit–Windsor area. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by MGM Resorts International. The casino opened in its temporary location on July 29, 1999. The permanent, luxury resort hotel opened on October 3, 2007, with a grand event which included models and celebrities including Ashanti, Kid Rock, and fireworks. Asian Americans are Americans with ancestry from the continent of Asia (including naturalized Americans who are immigrants from specific regions in Asia and descendants of those immigrants). Although this term had historically been used for all the indigenous peoples of the continent of Asia, the usage of the term "Asian" by the United States Census Bureau denotes a racial category that includes people with origins or ancestry from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia. It excludes people with ethnic origins from West Asia, who were historically classified as 'white' and will be categorized as Middle Eastern Americans starting from the 2030 census. Chinatown, Windsor
Windsor's West Side neighbourhood is home to a Chinatown. As of 2012 it is the largest Chinatown in proximity to Detroit, Michigan. The Chinatown started in 1961 with 500 Chinese to over 5,000 by 1981. The difference with Ottawa's Chinatown is that many of the Chinese residents are students studying at the University of Windsor. By 1982, an "official" establishment was made by the Essex County Chinese Canadian Association and the Chinese Benevolent Association of Windsor by establishing a "permanent" community centre on Wyandotte Street. According to another source, "... at first, the Chinese lived on the lower east side of Windsor in proximity to Riverside Drive East. This area became a redevelopment area. Ann Arbor is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States, and its county seat. Woodward Avenue (Detroit)
M-1, also known as Woodward Avenue, is a north–south state trunkline highway in the Metro Detroit area of the US state of Michigan. The highway, called "Detroit's Main Street", runs from Detroit north-northwesterly to Pontiac. It is one of the five principal avenues of Detroit, along with Michigan, Grand River, Gratiot, and Jefferson avenues. These streets were platted in 1805 by Judge Augustus B. On Leong Chinese Merchants Association
The On Leong Chinese Merchants Association (), or simply Chinese Merchants Association, formerly known as the On Leong Tong (), is a tong society operating out of its territory at the intersection of Canal Street and Mott Street in Chinatown, Manhattan (曼哈頓華埠). Established in November 1893, the tong fought a violent war for control of Chinatown's rackets and businesses with the Hip Sing Tong. In recent years, the Tong has been linked to the Ghost Shadows street gang led by Wing Yeung Chan. The Cass Corridor is a neighborhood on the west end of Midtown Detroit. It includes the Cass Park Historic District, the Cass-Davenport Historic District and Chinatown, Detroit, Old Chinatown. Vincent Jen Chin ( zh, first=t, t=陳果仁; May 18, 1955 – June 23, 1982) was an American draftsman of Chinese descent who was killed in a racially motivated assault by two white men, Chrysler plant supervisor Ronald Ebens and his stepson, laid-off autoworker Michael Nitz. Ebens and Nitz assailed Chin following a brawl that took place at a strip club in Highland Park, Michigan, where Chin had been celebrating his bachelor party with friends in advance of his upcoming wedding. Against the backdrop of high anti-Japanese sentiment in the United States at the time – known as "Japan bashing" – Ebens and Nitz assumed Chin was Japanese, and a witness described them using anti-Asian racial slurs as they attacked him, ultimately beating Chin to death.
