Chester Rapkin
Chester A. Rapkin was an American urban planner, urban planning theorist, and economist who made important contributions to housing and renewal programs in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He published an important study in the 1950s about land use and vehicular traffic patterns and served on the New York City Planning Commission from 1969 to 1977. He coined the name "SoHo" for Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood and became known as the "Father of SoHo". Early life and education Rapkin was born in 1918 in Manhattan. He attended public schools and received his undergraduate degree from City College in 1939 and a doctorate in economics from Columbia University in 1953. Margot Gayle
Margot McCoy Gayle (Born Sarah Margaret McCoy May 14, 1908 – September 28, 2008) was an American historic preservationist, activist, and writer. She led the effort to designate the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District, which preserved Victorian era cast-iron architecture in New York City. Early life and education Margot McCoy was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She earned an undergraduate degree from University of Michigan and a master's degree in bacteriology from Emory University. Gayle married accountant William T. Gayle and the couple lived in Greenwich Village in New York City until their divorce in 1957. She had two daughters, Carol and Gretchen. Career and activism Gayle was a lifelong Democratic Party activist and a member of the League of Women Voters. While studying in Atlanta, she lobbied for repeal of the Jim Crow-era poll taxes that were meant to suppress voter registration, and was so active on that issue that she earned the nickname Poll Tax Margot. Soho Grand Hotel
The Soho Grand Hotel is a hotel located at 310 West Broadway between Grand and Canal Streets in the SoHo neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City at the former location of Church of St. Alphonsus Liguori. It has 353 guest rooms, including ten suites and two penthouses. With the Roxy Hotel (formerly the Tribeca Grand Hotel), they make up GrandLife Hotels and are owned and operated by Leonard N. Stern of Hartz Mountain Industries. The Soho Grand Hotel opened on August 4, 1996 news of the build initiated significant opposition from local residents; eight prior attempts to build a hotel there in the preceding decade had failed.
