Chenango County, New York
Chenango County is a county located in the south-central section U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 47,220. Its county seat is Norwich. The county's name originates from an Oneida word meaning 'large bull-thistle'. History This was long the territory of the Oneida people, one of the first Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy or ''Haudenosaunee''. They occupied the area until after the Revolutionary War, when they were forced off the land, although they had been allies of the patriot colonists. They were granted a small reservation, which settlers continued to encroach on. When English colonists organized counties in 1683 in what is now New York, the present Chenango County was part of Albany County. New Berlin, New York
New Berlin is a town in Chenango County, in central New York, United States. The population was 2,682 at the 2010 census. The town contains the village of New Berlin. The town is at the eastern border of the county and is northeast of Norwich. History The first European-American settlers arrived ''circa'' 1790, after the American Revolutionary War. This followed the Iroquois League nations being forced to cede most of their territory to the United States following the defeat of their ally Great Britain. The Mohawk and other Iroquois nations moved to Ontario, Canada, where they were granted some land by the British Crown in compensation. Some small reservations were set up for them in New York state. The Town of New Berlin was founded by a partition of the Town of Norwich in 1807; it was named after Berlin, Germany, from which many new settlers had come. The pumpkinseed (''Lepomis gibbosus''), also referred to as pond perch, common sunfish, punkie, sunfish, sunny, and kivver, is a small/medium-sized North American freshwater fish of the genus '' Lepomis'' (true sunfishes), from family Centrarchidae (sunfishes, crappies and black basses) in the order Perciformes. Distribution and habitat The pumpkinseed's natural range in North America is from New Brunswick down the east coast to South Carolina. It then runs inland to the middle of North America, and extends through Iowa and back through Pennsylvania. Pumpkinseed sunfish have however been introduced throughout most of North America. They can now be found from Washington and Oregon on the Pacific Coast to Georgia on the Atlantic Coast. The tiger muskellunge (''Esox masquinongy × lucius'' or ''Esox lucius × masquinongy''), commonly called tiger muskie, is a carnivorous fish, and is the usually-sterile, hybrid offspring of the true muskellunge (''Esox masquinongy'') and the northern pike (''Esox lucius''). It lives in fresh water and its range extends to Canada, the Northeast, and the Midwest United States. It grows quickly; in one study, tiger muskie grew 1.5 times as fast as muskellunge. Like other hybrid species, tiger muskie are said to have "hybrid vigor," meaning they grow faster and stronger than the parent fish, and are also less susceptible to disease.
