Chemung County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of New York (state), New York. The population was 84,148 as of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Its county seat is Elmira, New York, Elmira. Its name is derived from a Lenape, Delaware Native American (U.S.), Indian village whose name means "big horn" in the Seneca language. The county is part of the Southern Tier region of the state. Chemung County comprises the Elmira, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Elmira-Corning (city), New York, Corning, NY Combined Statistical Area. Many signs posted along roads in Chemung County refer to the area as "Mark Twain Country," because the noted author lived and wrote for many years in Elmira. Corning is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. The town is in the eastern part of the county and borders the city of Corning. The town population was 5,986 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Erastus Corning, a financier. History The first settlement was near the current city of Corning around 1789. The Town of Corning began as the "Town of Painted Post" in 1796 when the county was founded. In 1836, the name was changed to honor an important investor in the local economy. Waverly is the largest village in Tioga County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 U.S. census, Waverly had a population of 4,177. It is located southeast of Elmira in the Southern Tier region. This village was incorporated as the southwest part of the town of Barton in 1854. Southern Tier Expressway
New York State Route 17 (NY 17) is a major state highway that extends for through the Southern Tier and Downstate regions of New York in the United States. It begins at the Pennsylvania state line in Mina and runs east as a limited-access highway, following the Southern Tier Expressway to Binghamton and the Quickway from Binghamton east to Woodbury. At Woodbury, the route turns south to become a local arterial, eventually following the Orange Turnpike to the New Jersey state line near Suffern. The portion of NY 17 west of Woodbury is in the process of being upgraded to Interstate 86, and as of February 2025, the routes are concurrent from the Pennsylvania border to Vestal and from Kirkwood to Windsor.
