Chemult, Oregon
Chemult is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Klamath County, Oregon, United States, on U.S. Route 97 near the drainage divide between the Klamath and Columbia Rivers. Chemult has a population of about 80 people. Chemult's elevation is . The locale was originally established in 1924 as a station on the Southern Pacific Cascade Line named "Knott" during construction. The station's name was changed to Chemult when the line opened in 1926 and a post office was established the same year. The name Chemult comes from a Klamath chief who was one of the 26 who signed the Klamath Lake Treaty of October 14, 1864. Amtrak's ''Coast Starlight'' stops in Chemult daily at the Chemult Amtrak station, and Pacific Crest Bus Lines stops daily at the station on its route from Klamath Falls to Bend. The Köppen climate classification divides Earth climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature. Winema National Forest
Toby "Winema" Riddle (born ; c. 1848 – 1920) was a Modoc woman who served as an interpreter in negotiations between the Native American Modoc tribe and the United States Army during the Modoc War (also called the Lava Beds War). She warned the peace commission of a possible Modoc attack, and she saved the life of the chairman Alfred B. Meacham when the 1873 attack took place. She and her family toured with Meacham after the war, starring in his lecture-play "Tragedy of the Lava Beds", to inform American people about the war. Meacham later published a book about Winema, which he dedicated to her. In 1891 Toby Riddle was one of the few Native American women to be awarded a military pension by the United States Congress, for her heroic actions during the peace negotiations in 1873. Bend, Oregon
Bend is a city in central Oregon and the county seat of Deschutes County, Oregon, Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. It is located to the east of the Cascade Range, on the Deschutes River. The site became known by pioneers as a ford (crossing), fordable crossing point of the river, where it ran through a bend. Klamath Falls ( ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The city was originally called ''Linkville'' when George Nurse founded the town in 1867. Chemult Station
Chemult station is an Amtrak train station in Chemult, Oregon. It is not staffed and only consists of a platform structure and a warming shelter, which replaced a smaller structure in 2010. History Chemult was originally a station on the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Southern Pacific Cascade Line, with regular service by the ''Klamath (train), Klamath'' and limited service by the ''Cascade (train), Cascade''. The station became a stop on the ''Coast Starlight'' in 1980. A new Chemult station was built on the site in 2010. The old structure, which was uninsulated and therefore too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, had been the subject of much criticism for being too small. The new station cost United States dollar, $600,000 and was built in the Cascadian architecture style. Construction began in May 2010 and was completed in November, in time for a November 10 opening.
