Chatsworth, Ontario
Chatsworth is a township municipality in Grey County, in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The township is located at the headwaters of the Styx River, the Saugeen River, the Sauble River, the Bighead River, the Spey River, and the Sydenham River. The current township was formed in late year 2000 with the amalgamation of Holland Township, Sullivan Township, and the village of Chatsworth. The first white settlers arrived in this area in the early 19th century, and a significant amount of settlement was underway in mid-to-late 1800s. The Canadian suffragette and activist Nellie McClung was born in the town of Chatsworth. The Sullivan Township area has a large Amish population. Government The township is led by a municipal council consisting of a Mayor, a Deputy Mayor and three Council Members. Niagara Escarpment
The Niagara Escarpment is an approximately discontinuous, arc-shaped but generally northward-facing escarpment, or cuesta, in Canada and the United States. The escarpment begins south of Lake Ontario and circumscribes the top of the Great Lakes Basin running from New York (state), New York through Ontario, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Notably, the escarpment is the cliff over which the Niagara River plunges at Niagara Falls, for which it is named. Owen Sound (2021 Canadian Census, 2021 Census population 21,612) is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Williamsford, Ontario
Williamsford is a village on the North Saugeen River in Grey County, Ontario, Canada ( Chatsworth Township). It has a general store, Pie Company, post office, bookstore and restaurant housed in a historic grain mill. A small dam controls the North Saugeen River. It has several churches, and a community cemetery. It is located on Highway 6 between Durham and Owen Sound. The village of Williamsford was first surveyed in 1858 comprising 400 acres in preparation for a railway which was to run from Toronto to Owen Sound. Each township was to contribute $40,000 to its construction. The post office was built in 1847 and the general store was built in the late 1800s. Recreation At the south end of the village sits the community centre grounds. The grounds contain a playground, a baseball diamond and a newly built curling rink. Chatsworth is a community in Grey County, Ontario, Canada, part of the Township of Chatsworth. It is located south of Owen Sound and north of Durham where Highways 6 and 10 merge. The village neighbours Williamsford, Dornoch, and Desboro. History Originally named ''Johnstown'' after an early landowner, the post office was renamed ''Holland East'' in 1851. It was renamed again to its present name in 1857. The name comes from Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire, near the home town of the postmaster at that time. Nellie McClung
Nellie Letitia McClung (; 20 October 18731 September 1951) was a Canadian author, politician, and social activist, who is regarded as one of Canada's most prominent suffragists. She began her career in writing with the 1908 book ''Sowing Seeds in Danny'', and would eventually publish sixteen books, including two autobiographies. She played a leading role in the women's suffrage movement in Canada, helping to grant women the vote in Alberta and Manitoba in 1916. McClung was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1921, where she served until 1926. As a member of the Famous Five, she was one of five women who took the Persons Case first to the Supreme Court of Canada, and then to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, for the right of women to serve in the Senate of Canada.
