Charter Oak–Ute Community School District
Charter Oak–Ute Community School District is a public school district headquartered in Charter Oak, Iowa. It serves grades K-8, while it sends high school students to the Maple Valley–Anthon–Oto Community School District as part of a grade-sharing arrangement. The district, located in portions of Crawford and Monona counties, serves Charter Oak, Ute and Soldier. History The district began operations in 1962 as a consolidation of the Charter Oak and Ute school districts. Beginning that year, Charter Oak–Ute had its own high school, In 1979, the entire school district had 850 students. The high school division had 113 students in the 1991-1992 school year. On July 1, 2004, the East Monona Community School District was dissolved, with a portion going to Charter Oak–Ute.

Charter Oak is a city in Crawford County, Iowa, United States, along the East Soldier River. The population was 535 at the 2020 census. History Charter Oak was first mentioned in newspapers August 13, 1869. The town Post Office was established May 4, 1876. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway was completed in February 1887, bringing the train through town twice daily as it hauled postage and freight from Manilla to Sioux City. Articles of Incorporation were filed for the town of Charter Oak February 14, 1891. Charter Oak was a busy community with many businesses to employ community members. The first school was built in 1889, as the community grew the school became too small. The current school building was built in 1916. In 1929 the first street was paved. In 1980 the freight service on the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railroad ended, the rail line was removed, and the station was sold. Crawford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,525. Its county seat is Denison. The county was named for William Harris Crawford, U.S. senator from Georgia and United States Secretary of the Treasury. History In January 1851, the Iowa Legislature authorized the creation of 50 additional counties in the state. Due to its lack of inhabitants, the designated Crawford County area was attached to Shelby County for purposes of revenue, taxation, and judicial matters. Monona County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,751. The county seat is Onawa. History The area around present-day Onawa was a stopping point in 1804 for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their exploration of the newly obtained Louisiana Purchase. Many years later, that site was memorialized as the Lewis and Clark State Park. Monona County was formed in 1851. It was perhaps named for an Indian word meaning "beautiful valley." East Monona Community School District
East Monona Community School District was a school district with a single school in Moorhead, Iowa. It previously served the cities of Moorhead and Soldier. History Circa 1997 the East Monona district and the Boyer Valley Community School District began a grade-sharing program. On September 9, 2003, the residents of the East Monona and Boyer Valley districts voted on a plan to consolidate the districts. The East Monona residents voted it down on a 313 to 178 basis, even though Boyer Valley residents voted in favor on a 385 to 30 basis. On Tuesday, September 23, 2003, the East Monona residents voted to dissolve the district, with 303–241 vote count. On July 1, 2004, the district was dissolved, with portions going to the Boyer Valley, Charter Oak–Ute, West Harrison, and West Monona school districts.
