Charles Stourton, 17th Baron Stourton
Charles Philip Stourton, 17th Baron Stourton (1752–1816) was the son of William Stourton and Winifred Howard, a great-granddaughter of the 6th Duke of Norfolk and a leading Roman Catholic. The seventeenth Baron succeeded his father in 1781, and was succeeded by his son William Joseph in 1816. On 12 July 1775, Charles married Mary Langdale, a daughter of Marmaduke, 5th Baron Langdale and his wife, Constantia Smythe, a sister of Walter Smythe and therefore an aunt of Maria Anne Smythe, who, following her second marriage became known as Mrs. Fitzherbert. Charles inherited Roundhay Park in Leeds, from his father, whose father, Captain the Hon. Charles Stourton, son of William Stourton, XII Baron Stourton, had acquired the estate by marriage and inheritance but sold it in 1803 before acquiring the Allerton Mauleverer estate in Yorkshire. William Stourton, 16th Baron Stourton
William Stourton, 16th Baron Stourton (1704–1781) was a British peer. By his marriage to a co-heiress of the 8th and 9th Dukes of Norfolk, his descendant Alfred Stourton, 20th Baron Stourton (1829–1893) inherited in 1877 the ancient abeyant titles Baron Mowbray and Baron Segrave, with many others,Debrett's Peerage, 1968, p.810 created by writ and thus able to descend via female heirs. Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk (12 July 162813 January 1684) was an English nobleman and politician. He was the second son of Henry Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel, and Lady Elizabeth Stuart. He succeeded his brother Thomas Howard, 5th Duke of Norfolk after Thomas's death in 1677. William Stourton, 18th Baron Stourton (1776–1846) was a Roman Catholic English peer. Baron Langdale
Baron Langdale was a title that was created twice in British history. The first creation came in the Peerage of England on 4 February 1658 when the prominent royalist commander of the English Civil War, Sir Marmaduke Langdale, was made by Baron Langdale, of Holme. He had fought alongside Prince Rupert and the Marquess of Newcastle at the Battle of Marston Moor, prior to the war he was the High Sheriff of Yorkshire and in later life a Catholic convert. His son, the second Baron, was Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull. The title descended from father to son until the death of the fifth Baron in 1777. He had no heir as his only son had died as an infant and the title became extinct on his death in 1777. Maria Anne Fitzherbert (''née'' Smythe, previously Weld; 26 July 1756 – 27 March 1837) was a longtime companion of George, Prince of Wales (later King George IV of the United Kingdom). In 1785, they secretly contracted a marriage that was invalid under English civil law because his father, King George III, had not consented to it. Fitzherbert was a Catholic and the law at the time forbade Catholics or spouses of Catholics from becoming monarch, so had the marriage been approved and valid, the Prince of Wales would have lost his place in the line of succession. The Vavasour family are an English Catholic family whose history dates back to Norman times. There are several branches of the family, some of whom have intermarried with other notable Catholic families, and are descended from William le Vavasour. Charles Langdale
Charles Langdale (formerly Stourton); 19 September 1787 – 1 December 1868) was a British politician, Roman Catholic layman, and biographer. He served as Whig Member of Parliament, wrote the memoirs of Maria Fitzherbert, and was a leading Roman Catholic figure during the 19th century. Origins Langdale was born Hon. Charles Stourton in 1787, the fourth son of Charles Stourton, 17th Baron Stourton by his wife Mary Langdale, a daughter and co-heiress of Marmaduke Langdale, 5th Baron Langdale (1771–1777). Baron Stourton is a title in the Peerage of England, It was created by patent in 1448 for John Stourton. In 1878, the ancient barony of Mowbray was called out of abeyance in favour of the twentieth Baron Stourton. About two weeks later, the barony of Segrave was also called out of abeyance in his favour. Thereafter, the three baronies remained united. The formal title is Baron Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton.
