Chapmans, British Columbia
Chapmans is a locality in the lower Fraser Canyon area of southwestern British Columbia. The place is on the east shore of the Fraser River and north of Alexandra Bridge Park. The locality, on BC Highway 1, is by road about north of Hope and south of Lytton. First Nations and interactions The Nlaka'pamux and Sto:lo First Nations have inhabited the area for about 10,000 years. During a mapping expedition, Alexander Caulfield Anderson visited the indigenous village of Ke-que-loose in 1847. The Tikwalus Heritage Trail, beginning at this point, was used by the Nlaka’pamux for thousands of years and was part of the Hudson's Bay Brigade Trail for 11 years. In the 1870s, 59 indigenous people lived in the vicinity. Name origin In 1858, during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, dozens placer mined the bar, which was one of the largest and richest on the east side of the river. Alexander Caulfield Anderson
Alexander Caulfield Anderson (10 March 1814 – 8 May 1884) was a British Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) fur-trader, explorer of British Columbia and civil servant. Anderson joined HBC in 1831 and emigrated to Canada from Europe. He was placed in leadership roles of various forts in British Columbia, including the founding of outposts. In the late 1840s he explored various route possibilities for HBC to connect interior forts with the Pacific Ocean. He retired in 1854, but moved to Victoria, British Columbia, to work as a civil servant. In 1876 he was appointed as dominion inspector of fisheries and proposed building British Columbia's first hatchery. In 1882, he was stranded on a sand bank for one night, causing his health to deteriorate. He died two years later. Walter Moberly (engineer)
Walter Moberly (August 15, 1832 – May 15, 1915) was a civil engineer and surveyor who played a large role in the early exploration and development of British Columbia, Canada, including discovering Eagle Pass, now used by the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Trans-Canada Highway. Early life and education He was born in Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire, England in 1832. In 1834, Walter moved with his family to Penetanguishene, Upper Canada (now Ontario), where his father, Capt. John Moberly, R. N. was appointed Post Commander. Walter received his primary education at the Base and later went to grammar school in Barrie. Skuzzy (sternwheeler)
''Skuzzy'' was a sternwheeler built by Canadian Pacific Railway contractor Andrew Onderdonk at Spuzzum, British Columbia, Canada, and launched on the Fraser River on May 4, 1882. ''Skuzzy'' was the first sternwheeler to ever navigate the perilous rapids north of Yale in the Fraser Canyon. Service Andrew Onderdonk held the contract to build the section of railway from Boston Bar to Lytton, worth $2,573,640. He built the ''Skuzzy'' with the intention of moving railway supplies by steamer to the camps north of Yale via the Fraser River instead of using pack trains over the Cariboo Road, which is a low but difficult pass between Yale and Spuzzum. Cariboo Road
The Cariboo Road (also called the Cariboo Wagon Road, the Great North Road or the Queen's Highway) was a project initiated in 1860 by the Governor of the Colony of British Columbia, James Douglas. Boston Bar, British Columbia
Boston Bar is an unincorporated community in the Fraser Canyon of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Name The name dates from the time of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush (1858–1861). A "bar" is a gold-bearing sandbar or sandy riverbank, and the one slightly down river and opposite today's town was populated heavily by Americans, who were known in the parlance of the Chinook Jargon as "Boston men" or simply "Bostons". A settlement developed on the east bank of the river to the north of the confluence with Anderson River. Joseph Trutch
Sir Joseph William Trutch, (18 January 1826 – 2 March 1904) was an English-born Canadian civil engineer, land surveyor, and politician who served as first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Early life and career Joseph was born in Ashcott, England, the son of William Trutch and his wife, Charlotte Hannah Barnes. William Trutch completed his apprenticeship to qualify as a solicitor in London, after which he moved to Jamaica. Reaction Ferry
A reaction ferry is a cable ferry that uses the reaction of the current of a river against a fixed tether to propel the vessel across the water. Such ferries operate faster and more effectively in rivers with strong currents. Types and modes of operation Some reaction ferries operate using an overhead cable suspended from towers anchored on either bank of the river at right angles to the current flow.
