Changi () is a Planning Areas of Singapore, planning area located in the geographical region of Tanah Merah, Singapore, Tanah Merah in the East Region, Singapore, East Region of Singapore. Sharing borders with Pasir Ris and Tampines to the west, Changi Bay to the southeast, the South China Sea to the east and the Serangoon Harbour to the north. Changi, excluding the two water catchments and islands of Singapore, is the largest planning area by land size. Today, Changi is an aviation hub. It is the location of both the Singapore Changi Airport, Changi Airport and Changi Air Base. Also located within Changi is Singapore's largest prison, Changi Prison. Changi Prison
Changi Prison Complex, often known simply as Changi Prison, is a prison in Changi in the eastern part of Singapore. History First prison Before Changi Prison was constructed, the only penal facility in Singapore was at Pearl's Hill, beside the barracks of Sepoy Lines, and was known as the Singapore Prison. By the 1930s, the Singapore Prison was overcrowded and deemed dangerous. The Singapore Prison had a capacity of 1,080. In the early 1920s the average daily number of convicts was 1,043; it reached 1,311 by 1931. Thus the 1931 report presented by the newly appointed Inspector of Prisons for the Straits Settlements, and the Superintendent of Singapore Prisons, Captain Otho Lewis Hancock, recommended providing additional accommodation. Changi Village
Changi Village is a modern village situated at the northern tip of Changi which is at the eastern end of Singapore. It is the usual connecting point for travellers heading to Pulau Ubin or Malaysia by ferry. Fishermen in the kelongs located in the Serangoon Harbour offshore also use this jetty as a drop off point to come onto mainland. Changi Village also has many resorts and leisure facilities to cater for a weekend getaway for many Singaporeans. Changi Air Base
The Changi Air Base is an airfield military airbase of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) located at Changi, in the eastern tip of Singapore. Sited at two locations to the east and west of Singapore Changi Airport, it co-shares runway facilities with the civilian airport and currently occupies a third runway slated for future expansion for civilian use by Singapore Changi Airport. Changi Beach Park
Changi Beach Park ( Chinese: 樟宜海滨公园, Malay: Taman Pantai Changi, Tamil: சாங்கி கடலோர பூங்கா ) is a beach park located at the northern tip of Changi in the eastern region of Singapore. The 28-hectare beach park is one of the oldest coastal parks in Singapore, retaining the " kampung" or village atmosphere of the 1960s and '70s. Tanah Merah, Singapore
Tanah Merah ( ta, தானா மேரா), is a geographical region located along the south-eastern coast of the East Region of Singapore. Although its boundaries are not exactly clear, it is widely accepted that the term refers to the southern coast of present-day Bedok, Tampines, Changi and Changi Bay. Etymology The name "Tanah Merah" appears in the seventeenth century (1604) map by Manuel Godinho de Erédia on Singapore, written as ''Tana Mera''. This place name is likely to have been an important reference point for the '' orang laut'' (sea people) in their activities in the region. The Malay name for this area is derived from the red lateritic cliffs along the coast that were visible from the sea, hence the name ''Tanah Merah'' or "red land". Changi Bay
Changi Bay is a planning area located in the geographical region of Tanah Merah in the East Region of Singapore. The planning area is bordered by Changi to the west and the South China Sea to the east, north and south. This planning area also includes the South China Sea island of Pedra Branca. The area encompasses 1.7 square kilometres, and with the exception of the two islands, consists entirely of reclaimed land. Despite its remote location, it is the site of installations like the Changi Naval Base, Navy Museum and SAF Yacht Club (Changi). There are no residents permanently living in the area and there are also currently no plans for permanent residential settlement in that area. There is only one public transport option in the area, which is bus service 35.
