Century Radio
Century Radio, also known as ''Century 100'' and later ''Century FM'', was a short-lived national commercial radio station in the Republic of Ireland, broadcasting from 4 September 1989 to 19 November 1991. History Launch Launched at 8am on Monday 4 September 1989, Century Radio was intended as the first licensed alternative to RTÉ Radio 1 within the Republic of Ireland and the country's first national commercial station. The first song played on the station was ''Pride (In the Name of Love)'' by U2. The national licence was issued in an effort to kill off pirate radio in the Republic of Ireland, but full coverage was only achieved in early 1990. It later emerged that Century's licence was issued illegally, as the then Minister for Communications, Ray Burke, received a bribe in the region of IR£100,000 to issue the licence. Marty Whelan
Martin "Marty" Whelan (born 7 June 1956) is an Irish radio and television personality currently working for Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). His early television credits included the game shows ''Millionaire'' and '' Fame and Fortune'', and the weekday afternoon show, '' Open House''. In 1997, Whelan became the host of the annual The Rose of Tralee contest, a role he held until 2003 when Ryan Tubridy replaced him. His RTÉ 2fm radio show, '' Marty in the Morning'' was axed in 2007 and replaced with '' The Colm & Jim-Jim Breakfast Show.'' Whelan now presents Marty in the Morning on RTÉ Lyric fm. He has since made a return to television, winning the reality series '' Celebrity Bainisteoir'' in 2008. Dairena Ní Chinnéide
Dairena Ní Chinnéide is an Irish poet and former broadcast journalist, interpreter and television producer. She has published 12 books of mainly bilingual poetry in Irish and one in English, titled 'deleted', published by Salmon Poetry. One of her better known poems is ''Jeaic ar Scoil''. She has received several awards for her writing, including from The Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship, The Arts Council of Ireland and Éalaíon na Gaeltachta Literature Awards. She was nominated Poet Laureate for Listowel during the Poetry Ireland initiative, Poetrytown 2021. Biography Ní Chinnéide is from the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry. Capital London is an Independent Local Radio station owned and operated by Global Media & Entertainment as part of its national Capital (radio network), Capital Network. As Capital Radio it was launched in the London area in 1973 as one of Britain's first two commercial radio stations. Its brief was to entertain, while its opposite number, LBC, London Broadcasting (LBC), was licensed to provide news and information. In search of a larger audience in 1974, Capital Radio rapidly moved from a general and entertainment station with drama, features, documentaries and light music to a more successful pop music-based format. Fine Gael ( ; ; ) is a centre-right, liberal-conservative, Christian democratic political party in Ireland. Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Hurling (, ') is an outdoor Team sport, team game of ancient Gaelic culture, Gaelic Irish origin, played by men and women. Jonathan Mark Pearce (born 23 December 1959) is an English sports commentator on football for the BBC and TNT Sports. He worked for BBC Radio 5 Live and ''Match of the Day'', and participated in other lower-profile sports programmes. Early life and career Growing up, Pearce aspired to become a footballer for Bristol City. His potential football career ended prematurely when he broke his leg at age 14.
