Century City, Cape Town
Century City is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It is a mixed-use development, which includes entertainment, residential, retail, and commercial components. The neighborhood is located 10 km to the north-east of Cape Town CBD, along the N1 freeway, and is traversed by numerous waterways, wetlands, and canals. Development Development began under Monex Development in 1997 and continues under the new owners, Rabie Property Group. Century City's original developments were the Ratanga Junction theme park and Canal Walk shopping centre. When it was opened in October 2000, Canal Walk was the largest shopping mall in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere in lettable area at 141,000 m2. The Ratanga Junction theme park closed in May 2018 after many years of financial problems. Table Mountain
Table Mountain (; ) is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain has 8,200 plant species, of which around 80% are fynbos (Afrikaans for 'fine bush'). Canal Walk
Canal Walk is a shopping mall located in Cape Town, South Africa. It is part of Century City, a suburb and 250 hectare mixed-use development, built in 1997, that sits alongside the N1 freeway. The largest mall in the city and the third largest in Africa, Canal Walk is built in what the developers call "Cape Venetian architecture". The mall features over 400 stores, over 8,000 parking bays, a wide variety of restaurants, and an arcade. History Canal Walk was built in October 2000, at an estimated cost of around R1.3 billion. Ratanga Junction
Ratanga Junction was an amusement park located in Century City, Cape Town in South Africa. The park opened in December 1998 as part of the development of the Century City area, adjacent to Cape Town's biggest shopping centre, Canal Walk. Its biggest ride was the Cobra rollercoaster. Ratanga Junction had a tropical island theme as can be seen in its logo and the fact that the park hosted several wet rides. Since early on Ratanga Junction struggled from financial difficulties, scaling back the number of restaurants throughout the early 2000s and rumours of its imminent closure going back as far as 2004. These rumours were exacerbated by the park closing for certain winters in order to prevent losing money from running at a loss during winter and the sale of the park seemed likely to many Cape Town residents since the surrounding developments in Century City were all running successfully. The N1 is a national route (South Africa), national route in South Africa that runs from Cape Town through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Polokwane to Beitbridge, Limpopo, Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe.
