Central Chișinău
Sectorul Centru () is one of the five sectors in Chișinău, the capital of Moldova. The local administration is managed by a pretor appointed by the city administration. It governs over a portion of the city of Chișinău itself (central and western parts), and the suburban town of Codru. It is largely populated by Moldovans and Romanians. History The Center Sector was established at the beginning of the 19th century on the site of agricultural and grazing lands. As an administrative-territorial unit in the composition of the city of Chisinau, the Centru sector was established in 1941 and initially named the Lenin district. Heritage Currently, the Center sector has an estimated population of 94.8 thousand inhabitants and covers an area of 3.4 thousand ha. Nativity Cathedral, Chișinău
The Cathedral of Christ's Nativity () is the main cathedral of the Moldovan Orthodox Church in Sectorul Centru, Moldova. It was built in 1830 to a design by Abram Melnikov. The bell tower was destroyed in 1962, and the cathedral was transformed into an exhibition centre during the Soviet period, before returning to religious purposes. A new bell tower was constructed in 1997. History It was commissioned by the governor of New Russia, Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov, and Metropolitan Gavril Bănulescu-Bodoni in 1830. The cathedral was built in the 1830s to a Neoclassical design by Abram Melnikov (who had designed a similar church in Bolhrad). The cathedral was bombed during World War II, and its bell tower was destroyed by the local Communists in 1962. Alley Of Classics, Chișinău
The Alley of Classics () is a sculptural complex located in the Stephen the Great Park in Central Chișinău, Moldova. Overview The alley is decorated on both sides with red granite busts of classic literary figures and political leaders from Moldova. The alley is located between the Ștefan cel Mare boulevard and the bronze bust of Alexander Pushkin, set on a granite column and made by Russian sculptor Alexander Opekushin. The alley was built and received its name in 1958, and became one of the most important tourist attractions in Chișinău. At first there were only twelve sculptures, but after the fall of the Soviet Union the local authorities added busts of Romanian and Moldovan writers and poets that were banned during the Soviet regime. Triumphal Arch, Chișinău
The Triumphal Arch () is a monument situated in Central Chișinău next to the Nativity Cathedral on Piața Marii Adunări Naționale nr. 2 and directly opposite Government House. History The Triumphal Arch was built in 1840 by the architect Luka Zauschevic and thanks to the governor's of Bessarabia initiative to commemorate the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War (1828–29). From its construction to 2011 the monument sheltered at its second level a huge bell of nearly 6.400 kg (400 Puduri). The building is square in plan and has two levels. The height of the monument is 13 m. The capitals of the four pillars of the building were carved in Corinthian style. The upper level is decorated in a classical style. Capitoline Wolf, Chișinău
The Capitoline Wolf () is a monument in Central Chișinău, Moldova. It is located in front of the National History Museum of Moldova. Overview During the first decades of the 20th century, Kingdom of Italy donated to Kingdom of Romania five copies of the Capitoline Wolf, which were installed in Chişinău (1921), Bucharest (1906), Cluj-Napoca (1921), Târgu Mureş (1924) and Timișoara (1926). In Chişinău, the monument was completed in 1923 and placed in front of Sfatul Țării Palace. In 1940, at the beginning of the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina, the copy from Chişinău was destroyed. In 1990, Romania donated a new copy of Capitoline Wolf to Moldova. This statue was unveiled in front of the National History Museum of Moldova on December 1, 1990. Stephen The Great Monument
The Stephen the Great Monument () is a prominent monument in Chișinău, Moldova. Description The monument to Stephen the Great was designed by architect Alexandru Plămădeală in 1923. It was erected near the main entrance of the Ștefan cel Mare Central Park, Stephen the Great Park in Central Chișinău. The monument was completed in 1927 and opened on 29 April 1928 (to replace the monument to Alexander II of Russia, destroyed by the Romanian authorities in 1918). The total cost of the monument was 4.000.000 Romanian leu, lei. A few days before the 1940 Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina, the monument was relocated to Vaslui, and its pedestal was blown up. Sfatul Țării Palace
The Sfatul Țării Palace is a building in Chișinău, Moldova. Overview The building is located near Central Chișinău. It served as a meeting place for the Sfatul Țării, the assembly which proclaimed the independence of the Moldavian Democratic Republic in 1917 then union with Romania in 1918.
