Centola ( Cilentan: ''Cendula'') is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. Geography Located in southern Cilento, Centola borders with the municipalities of Camerota, Celle di Bulgheria, Montano Antilia, Pisciotta and San Mauro la Bruca. The municipality counts the town itself (2,550 inhabitants) and four hamlets (''frazioni''). San Severino, Centola
San Severino is an Italian village and hamlet (''frazione'') of the municipality of Centola in the Province of Salerno, Campania. As of 2011 its population was 435. History The village was founded in the 10th-11th century. Until 1861, it was known as San Severino di Camerota. The original settlement is located upon a hill but was gradually abandoned during the end of the 19th century after the construction of a railway line. New houses were built in the valley, just below the hill but closer to the railway. Nowadays, the ancient village is a ghost town and a preserved heritage, because of the conservation status of its medieval structure. Geography Located in the valley of Mingardo river, close to the mount Bulgheria, San Severino is found along the provincial road SP 109, in southern Cilento. Palinuro
Palinuro is an Italian small town, the most populated civil parish (''frazione'') of Centola, Province of Salerno, in the Campania region. The name of the town is derived from Palinurus, the helmsman of Aeneas, as recorded in the fifth and sixth books of the ''Aeneid''. Geography Palinuro lies on the southern side of Cilento, on the Tyrrhenian Sea and in the northern part of Cape Palinuro. The town, situated at the estuaries of the Lambro and Mingardo rivers, is also the main port of the comune. It is 7 km from Centola, 8 km from Marina di Camerota, 10 km from Pisciotta and 80 km from Salerno. Camerota is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History Its toponym could come from the Greek word "καμαρὸτος" (kamaròtos), meaning curved; or from the Latin word "camurus", with the same meaning. Pisciotta
Pisciotta is an Italian town and communes of Italy, commune in the province of Salerno, region of Campania. History According to legend, Troy, Trojans escaping from the fire and the destruction of their city, Troy, founded Siris, Magna Graecia, Siris. Some of the inhabitants of the city later advanced westwards, following the vast valley of the Sinni (river), Sinni river, up to the lake and to the Sirino mountain (from which they took the name), near present-day Lagonegro, where they founded the city of Siruci (now called Seluce). From here, they went to the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the beach of the Gulf of Policastro. Here they founded the colony of ''Pixous''. The Cilento Coast (Italian: ''Costiera Cilentana'') is an Italian stretch of coastline in Cilento, on the southern side of the Province of Salerno. It is situated between the gulfs of Salerno and Policastro, extending from the municipalities of Capaccio-Paestum in the north-west, to Sapri in the south-east. It is particularly known for its almost unspoiled natural landscapes and the very high cleanliness of its waters. Cape Palinuro () is located in southwestern Italy, approximately 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Salerno, in southern part of Cilento region. Cilento
Cilento () is an Italian mountain range (part of the Lucan Apennines), which gives its name to a geographical region of Campania in the central and southern part of the province of Salerno. Is an important tourist area of southern Italy. Geography The Cilento mountain range, part of the Lucan Apennines, is located south to Sele plain, north to Basilicata, west to Alburni mountain range and Vallo di Diano. History Originally known as "Montagna" and after "Montana", it was founded on the ruins of an Ancient Greek settlement.
