Alte Dezimalwaage
Alte is a village and Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve region in the south of Portugal. The population in 2011 was 1,997, in an area of . A scale or balance is a device used to measure weight or mass. These are also known as mass scales, weight scales, mass balances, massometers, and weight balances. The traditional scale consists of two plates or bowls suspended at equal distances from a Lever, fulcrum. One plate holds an object of unknown mass (or weight), while objects of known mass or weight, called ''Weight (object), weights'', are added to the other plate until mechanical equilibrium is achieved and the plates level off, which happens when the masses on the two plates are equal. The perfect scale rests at neutral. A spring scale will make use of a spring (device), spring of known stiffness to determine mass (or weight). Suspending a certain mass will extend the spring by a certain amount depending on the spring's stiffness (or spring constant). Franz Reuleaux
Franz Reuleaux (; ; 30 September 1829 – 20 August 1905) was a German mechanical engineer and a lecturer at ''Technische Hochschule Berlin'' (today Technische Universität Berlin), later appointed as the president of the academy. He was often called the father of kinematics. He was a leader in his profession, contributing to many important domains of science and knowledge. Today, he may be best remembered for the Reuleaux triangle, a curve of constant width that he helped develop as a useful mechanical form. Biography Early life Reuleaux was born in Eschweiler in Germany (at the time part of Prussia). His father and grandfather were both mechanical engineers. His technical training was at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic School. He then studied at universities in Berlin and Bonn. Middle years After a time spent in the family business he became a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute in Zürich.
