The Fred Conway Cumberland Cup is the current senior county cup in the ancient county of Cumberland. It is administered by the Cumberland Football Association (CFA). According to the current rules of the competition, it is open to all clubs whose first affiliation is with the CFA. Currently Carlisle United are the only professional team from the football league in the competition since Workington left the football league in 1977, so as a result they now tend to enter their reserve team. Carlisle ( , ; from ) is a city in the Cumberland district of Cumbria, England. Carlisle's early history is marked by the establishment of a settlement called Luguvalium to serve forts along Hadrian's Wall in Roman Britain. Due to its proximity to Scotland (being located south of the current Anglo-Scottish border), Carlisle Castle and the city became an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages. The castle served as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots in 1568 and currently hosts the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. A priory was built in the early 12th century, which subsequently became Carlisle Cathedral in 1133 on the creation of the Diocese of Carlisle. William John McStay (born 26 November 1961) is a Scottish former footballer and manager of clubs including Sligo Rovers, Újpest FC, Ross County and Celtic Nation. Playing career Born in Hamilton, McStay played for Celtic from 1979 to 1987. McStay made his debut on 2 April 1983 when he came on as a sub in Celtic's 3–1 home win over Motherwell and went on to make 65 league appearances, including 10 as a substitute, scoring two goals. McStay transferred to Huddersfield Town in March 1987 and later played for Notts County and Hartlepool United. Born in Barnsley his playing career spanned only one season in The Football League with Scunthorpe United, along with spells playing for Gainsborough Trinity, Mossley and Frickley Athletic.
