Celestino Martínez
Celestino Martínez Sánchez (19 May 1820, Caracas - 23 December 1885, Caracas) was a Venezuelan painter, lithographer, illustrator and photographer. He also spent part of his career working in Colombia. Biography His father, Juan José Dionisio Martínez Alemán (1773-1847), was Secretary to the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela. He began his education in art with Juan Lovera in 1832. Later, he visited Europe, spending most of his time in Paris, where he studied the "Old Masters". In 1839, at the age of nineteen, he taught drawing classes at the "Sociedad Económica Amigos del País" (Economic Society of Friends of the Nation), founded by General José Antonio Páez. These courses lasted for less than a year, but he was able to become an instructor at the new "Escuela de Dibujo" (School of Drawing) He taught at several other institutions as well. Republic Of New Granada
The Republic of New Granada was a 1831–1858 centralist unitary republic consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today's Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil. On 9 May 1834, the national flag was adopted and was used until 26 November 1861, with the Gran Colombian colours in Veles' arrangement. The merchant ensign had the eight-pointed star in white. The National Art Gallery (Galería de Arte Nacional; GAN) also known as Gallery of National Art is located in the Plaza Morelos area of Caracas, Venezuela. The museum opened in May 1976. In 2009 it moved to a new building designed by Carlos Gómez de Llerena, Venezuela's largest museum building. History The museum was housed until 2009 in a neo-classical building near Los Caobos Park. The building was designed in 1935 for the Fine Art Museum (''Museo de Bellas Artes''). by Carlos Raul Villanueva, one of the best-known architects of Venezuela. The Capital District ( es, Distrito Capital) is a federal district of Venezuela. It has an area of 433 km2 and there is only one administrative division (''municipio''), Libertador, which contains about half of Caracas, the Venezuelan capital city, which is also the seat of the three branches of the federal government of Venezuela. The population in 2004 was 2,073,768. The District borders on the states of Vargas and Miranda. Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios (24 July 1783 – 17 December 1830) was a Venezuelan military and political leader who led what are currently the countries of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia to independence from the Spanish Empire. He is known colloquially as '' El Libertador'', or the ''Liberator of America''. Simón Bolívar was born in Caracas in the Captaincy General of Venezuela into a wealthy criollo family. Before he turned ten, he lost both parents and lived in several households. Bolívar was educated abroad and lived in Spain, as was common for men of upper-class families in his day. While living in Madrid from 1800 to 1802, he was introduced to Enlightenment philosophy and met his future wife María Teresa Rodríguez del Toro y Alaysa. Antonio José Carranza
Antonio José Carranza Goicochea (12 June 1817, Caracas - 31 March 1893, Caracas) was a Venezuelan painter. Biography His father, Pedro Donoso Carranza, was a merchant pilot from Cádiz. He began by studying law at the Central University of Venezuela, but soon developed an interest in music and drawing; especially the latter. In pursuit of that interest, he enrolled at the School of Drawing, where he studied with . When Sosa died, Carranza was chosen to take his place. Shortly after, he was appointed a preceptor at the Normal School. From 1844, he taught at several institutions. In 1849, he replaced Carmelo Fernández in the drawing department at the Academy of Mathematics, when political issues forced Fernández to leave the country. He also obtained a position as Director at the School of Fine Arts. When the was created in 1860, he taught topographic drawing there.
