Newton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,291. Its county seat is Decatur. History The land that would become Newton County was purchased from the Choctaw under the terms of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. Newton County was split off from the southern part of Neshoba County and organized on February 26, 1836. The county is named for scientist Isaac Newton. The Battle of Newton's Station was fought in the county on April 24, 1863, during Grierson's Raid of the American Civil War. Union troops pulled up railroad tracks and burned the depot at Newton's Station. In February 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman crossed the county, burning the county seat at Decatur and was nearly captured during the Meridian Campaign. Area codes 601 and 769 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for central and southern Mississippi, excluding the three counties of the Gulf Coast. Area code 601 was one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947. Until 1997, it served the entire state of Mississippi. Newton is a city in Newton County, Mississippi. The population was 3,195 in the 2020 census. History The Battle of Newton's Station was fought here on April 24, 1863 during the famous Grierson's Raid by the Union Army cavalry regiments in a brigade commanded by Col. Benjamin Grierson (1826-1911). This was an important action during the long Vicksburg campaign of a siege and battle to take the port town of Vicksburg and fortress on the Mississippi River by Federal Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and split the southern Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). On February 13, 1948, a tornado, with an estimated intensity of F3 on the Fujita scale, impacted the town, killing five people and destroying 30 homes.
