Catalina, Newfoundland And Labrador
Catalina ( ) is a community located on the eastern side of the Bonavista Peninsula, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Catalina adjoins the union town of Port Union, the town built for and home to the Fisherman's Union Company established by Sir William Coaker. The name of the town is purported by E.S. Seary to derive from the French ''Havre Sainte-Katherine'' which was later changed to the Spanish name ''Cataluna''.Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Volume one, page 382 In 2005 Catalina was amalgamated with Little Catalina, Melrose and Port Union to form the town of Trinity Bay North. Newfoundland ( , ; , ) is a large island within the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is situated off the eastern coast of the Northern America, North American mainland and the geographical region of Labrador. The island contains 29 percent of the province's land area, but is home to over 90% of the province's population, with about 60% of the province's population located on the small southeastern Avalon peninsula. The island is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait. Fisherman's Union Company
The Fishermen's Union Trading Company (F.U.T.C.), a limited liability company, was founded in 1911 to be the commercial arm of the Fishermen's Protective Union (FPU).''Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador'', Volume two, page 187 Its mandate, as set out by William Coaker, founder of the FPU, was to be the agent for cooperative purchasing of supplies by fishermen along the coast of Newfoundland and to also serve as a cooperative marketing agent of their fish catches. Purpose As part of the greater movement by Coaker to organize the fishermen along the coast by the formation of the FPU, it was necessary to establish a trading company to combat the credit or truck system existing at that time. Fishermen were encouraged to purchase shares which were then used to buy goods and sold back to the fishermen at cost. Route 237 is a bypass road linking Catalina, Trinity Bay (situated on Route 230) with Newman's Cove, Bonavista Bay (situated on Route 235). It is referred to as Kings Cove Road There are no other communities along this highway, no other highways intersect it beyond the Routes 230 and 235. Within Catalina the highway is connected with local streets (Bond Street, Guys Lane, Harts Road). The entire length of the roadway is paved with single lane in either direction. ''Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador'' is an encyclopedia commissioned by Joey Smallwood to capture the people, places, events and history of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Smallwood's view on the purpose of the encyclopedia was summed up in his remark The work took nearly thirteen years to complete and contains 5 volumes containing over 3,900 pages by more than 200 authors. The first volume was printed in 1981 with volume two released in 1984. Smallwood had suffered a stroke two months after volume two was released. The work was suspended until 1987 when the Joseph R. Smallwood Foundation was established with a mandate to complete the five volume encyclopedia. Volume five was published in 1994.
