Carriageworks
Carriageworks is a multi-arts urban cultural precinct located at the former Eveleigh Carriage Workshops in Redfern, New South Wales, Redfern, Sydney, Australia. Carriageworks showcases contemporary art and performing arts, as well as being used for filming, festivals, fairs and commercial exhibitions. The largest such venue in Australia, it is a cultural facility of the Government of New South Wales, and receives support from Create NSW and the Australian Government, federal government through the Australia Council for the Arts. The centre has commissioned new work by Australian and international artists, and has been home to eight theatre, dance and film companies, including Performance Space, Sydney Chamber Opera and Moogahlin Performing Arts, and a weekly farmers' market has operated there for many years. Eveleigh Carriage Workshops
The Eveleigh Carriage Workshops were built by the New South Wales Government Railways in 1888 as a depot for its passenger carriage fleet. The workshops are located west of what is now Redfern station on the northern side of the Main Suburban railway line opposite the heritage-listed Eveleigh Railway Workshops. The repair and heavy maintenance of both Sydney suburban and long-distance carriages were undertaken on site between 1888 until its closure in 1989. In 1986 the workshop was upgraded to refurbish single-deck suburban carriages. Following this program ceasing the works closed in September 1989 after which it was used to store redundant carriages and to remove asbestos from locomotives and carriages. Performance Space
Performance Space, later Performance Space at Carriageworks, is an arts organisation based in Sydney, Australia, that develops and presents interdisciplinary arts and experimental theatre. History Performance Space was established in 1983 in a venue in Cleveland St, Redfern (known as Cleveland Street Performance Space from 1980 until 1983), with Christopher Allen as its manager. The building was formerly the State Rail Authority Trade Union Dance Hall. Ryoji Ikeda (池田 亮司 ''Ikeda Ryōji'', born 1966) is a Japanese Visual arts, visual and sound artist who currently lives and works in Paris, France. Ikeda's music is concerned primarily with sound in a variety of "raw" states, such as sine tones and noise, often using frequencies at the edges of the range of human hearing.
