Caron Wheeler
Caron Melina Wheeler (born 19 January 1963) is a British singer, songwriter, record producer and musician. Born and raised in London, she performed in various singing competitions as a teenager and began her recording career as one of the founding members of Brown Sugar. She was also one of the founding members of the female backing vocalist group Afrodiziak. She officially rose to fame in the late 1980s as the lead singer of R&B group Soul II Soul. Managed by her bandmate, Jazzie B, the group became one of London's best-selling groups in the 1990s. Their debut album, '' Club Classics Vol. One'' (1989), which established them as a global success worldwide, earned two Grammy Awards and featured the UK and Billboard number-one singles " Keep Movin'" and " Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)". "Keep On Movin'" is a song by British soul and R&B band Soul II Soul. It was the second single released in March 1989 by Virgin from their debut album, '' Club Classics Vol. One'' (1989) (''Keep On Movin''' in the United States), after "Fairplay". It is one of two songs on the album that features British R&B singer Caron Wheeler (the other being " Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)") and it became one of Soul II Soul's most successful songs. It reached number five on the UK Singles Chart upon its release in March 1989 and number 11 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and was even more successful on ''Billboard''s R&B charts, where it hit number one. Kofi (musician)
Carol Simms, better known as Kofi, is a British lovers rock singer who was a member of the group Brown Sugar prior to embarking on a solo career. Early life Simms was born in 1961 in Lambeth, South London, the third youngest of six children. With her Church Of God upbringing, and with the sound of everything from ska, reggae, jazz and soul emanating from the family home, Simms' love of music was enhanced, and after a brief flirtation with acting during which she attended drama school, her urge to make music began to dominate. At fourteen Simms wrote to the local newspaper, the ''South London Press'', and an article about her wanting to become a singer was featured. Musical career Simms first found success as a member of the Lovers rock trio Brown Sugar (which also featured Caron Wheeler and Pauline Catlin). The Ronettes
The Ronettes were an American girl group from Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City. The group consisted of the lead singer Veronica Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector), her older sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. They had sung together since they were teenagers, then known as "The Darling Sisters". Signed first by Colpix Records in 1961, they moved to Phil Spector's Philles Records in March 1963 and changed their name to "The Ronettes". The Ronettes placed nine songs on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, six of which became Top 40 hits. The Shirelles
The Shirelles were an American girl group formed in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1957. They consisted of schoolmates Shirley Owens (later Shirley Alston Reeves), Doris Coley (later Doris Kenner-Jackson), Addie "Micki" Harris (later Addie Harris McFadden), and Beverly Lee. Founded in 1957 for a talent show at their high school, they were signed by Florence Greenberg of Tiara Records. Their first single, "I Met Him on a Sunday", was released by Tiara and licensed by Decca Records in 1958. After a brief and unsuccessful period with Decca, they went with Greenberg to her newly formed company, Scepter Records. Working with Luther Dixon, the group rose to fame with " Tonight's the Night". After a successful period of collaboration with Dixon and promotion by Scepter, with seven top 20 hits, the Shirelles left Scepter in 1966. "Livin' in the Light" is a song by British singer-songwriter Caron Wheeler, released in August 1990 as the first single from her debut solo album, '' UK Blak'' (1990). Wheeler wrote the song with N. P. Hail, and produced it with Afrika Baby Bam and Blacksmith. Its lyrics describe people being dragged away from their culture and having to survive within a new surrounding. The song references slavery and reparations. Background EMI Records released "Livin' in the Light" on 27 August 1990 as the lead single from ''UK Blak''. The song spent a total of six weeks on the chart and peaked number 14 on the UK Singles chart. It was a number-one hit on the US ''Billboard'' Dance Club Songs chart, and achieved top-twenty peaks on several other countries' record charts.
