Carmen Hernández
María del Carmen Hernández Barrera (24 November 1930 in Ólvega – 19 July 2016 in Madrid) was a Spanish Catholic catechist and the co-founder of the Neocatechumenal Way. Her cause for canonization has been initiated. Biography Carmen Hernández was born on 24 November 1930 in Ólvega, Spain, but she moved with her family at a very young age to Tudela, Spain where she spent most of her childhood. When she was 15 years old, her family moved to Madrid. As a teenager, she resolved to be a missionary and wanted to go to India, but her father would not permit it. She obtained a degree in chemistry in Madrid by the age of 21. As soon as she could, she fulfilled her desire to become a missionary by joining the Missionaries of Christ Jesus, from whom she received a degree in theology. Mario Pezzi (born Gottolengo, 19 September 1941) is an Italian Catholic priest, theologian and catechist. He is one of leading names of the Neocatechumenal Way, with Kiko Argüello and Carmen Hernández. Biography He entered the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus seminary in 1951, aged 10 years old. He was ordained a priest on 18 March 1969. He joined the Neocatechumenal Way in 1970, becoming a priest of their International Responsible Team the following year. He first met Pope John Paul II in 1979, together with the two founders of the Neocatechumenal Way. His work is to present a theological-pastoral view inside the NCW, where he is the leading priest. Every year he carries out the work of collating texts from the Magisterium and Tradition of the Church to help the catechists and members of the NCW. ''Cursillos in Christianity'' (, "Short courses of Christianity") is an apostolic movement of the Catholic Church. Francisco José Gómez de Argüello y Wirtz (born January 9, 1939) is a Spanish artist and, together with Carmen Hernández and Father Mario Pezzi, an initiator of the Neocatechumenal Way. Early life Argüello was born in León, he studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, and in 1959 was awarded a Special National Prize for Painting. In 1964 he began the Neocatechumenal Way in the slum of Palomeras Altas in Madrid. Crisis and conversion At the Royal Academy Argüello went through a profound existential crisis, of which he gave a vivid account in an interview.
