Carlos Meléndez Ramírez (February 1, 1861 – October 8, 1919) was born in San Salvador, El Salvador to Rafael Meléndez and Mercedes Ramírez (daughter of Norberto Ramírez). He was President of El Salvador from February 9, 1913 to August 29, 1914 and again from March 1, 1915 to December 21, 1918. He was the older brother of president Jorge Meléndez. He died in New York on October 8, 1919, aged 58. The president of El Salvador ( es, Presidente de El Salvador), officially known as the President of the Republic of El Salvador ( es, Presidente de la República de El Salvador), is the head of state and head of government of El Salvador. He is also, by Constitutional Law, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of El Salvador. The office was created in the Constitution of 1841. From 1821 until 1841, the head of state of El Salvador was styled simply as Head of State (''Jefe de Estado''). Doctor Manuel Enrique Araujo (12 October 1865 – 9 February 1913) was a Salvadoran doctor and politician who served as the President of El Salvador from 1 March 1911 until his assassination on 9 February 1913. He was the first civilian president elected in El Salvador since Rafael Zaldívar was deposed by the military in 1885. During his presidency, he attempted to implement various social reforms and the current flag of El Salvador was adopted.
