Caratinga
Caratinga is a Municipalities of Brazil, Brazilian municipality located in the countryside of the States of Brazil, state of Minas Gerais in the Southeast Region, Brazil, Southeast Region of Brazil. Situated in the Vale do Rio Doce (mesoregion), Vale do Rio Doce, it is part of the Vale do Aço metropolitan area, approximately east of the state capital, Belo Horizonte. The municipality covers an area of , with in the urban area, and its population was estimated at 90,687 inhabitants in 2024. The exploration of the region began in the 16th century with expeditions along the Doce River, Doce and Caratinga rivers in search of precious metals. However, the area was first settled in the 19th century when Domingos Fernandes Lana explored it for ipecac, a valuable medicinal plant, and reported on the fertile lands and peaceful indigenous population. Santana do Paraíso is a Municipalities of Brazil, Brazilian municipality located in the interior of the States of Brazil, state of Minas Gerais, in the Southeast Region, Brazil, Southeast Region of the country. It is situated in the Vale do Rio Doce (mesoregion), Vale do Rio Doce and is part of the Vale do Aço metropolitan area, Vale do Aço Metropolitan Region, approximately east of the Belo Horizonte, state capital. The municipality covers an Area, area of just over , with constituting the Urban area, urban area, and its population was estimated at 48,286 inhabitants in 2024. The exploration of the region where the city now stands began in the 19th century, through expeditions ordered by John VI of Portugal aimed at occupying the area, which became feasible only after the evangelization of local indigenous peoples by Guido Marlière after 1819.
