Zouk (musical Movement)
Zouk is a musical movement pioneered by the French Antillean band Kassav' in the early 1980s. It was originally characterized by a fast tempo (120–145 bpm), a percussion-driven rhythm and a loud horn section. The fast zouk béton of Martinique and Guadeloupe faded away during the 1980s. Musicians from Martinique and Guadeloupe added MIDI instrumentation to their compas style, which developed into zouk-love. Karin Mensah (born 1965) is a classically trained singer from Cape Verde, whose preferred genre is jazz and traditional music from West Africa. She is a music educator who has served as the founder and director of the Accademia Superiore di Canto (Music Academy of Higher Education) in Verona, Italy, since 2004. Biography Karin Mensah was born on 8 March 1965 in Dakar, Senegal, in a community of expatriated Cape Verdeans. In 1975, she entered the School of Arts for Dance and Song in Dakar and began singing professionally in theater and on television from age 11. Her father was an influence on her, as he enjoyed classical music and though it was an unusual genre in Africa, she grew up listening to Beethoven and opera. António Vicente Lopes (d. 1987), better known as Antoninho Travadinha was one of the major autodidactic musicians of Cape Verde originated from Janela in Paúl the island of Santo Antão. Tcheka (Manuel Lopes Andrade; born in Ribeira da Barca, Santiago, Cape Verde, on July 20, 1973) is a Cape Verdean singer, songwriter and guitarist, who is well known for his work in transposing the traditional genre batuque to the electro-acoustic guitar. Biography Tcheka grew up in a musical family. By age 14, Tcheka began playing with his famous violinist father, Nho Raul Andrade, at local festivals, weddings and baptisms. Armando Zeferino Soares, (1920 in São Nicolau, Cape Verde – April 3, 2007) was a Capeverdean composer, author of the famous song ''Sodade''. He was born in Praia Branca in the island of São Nicolau and worked there as a salesman. Gil Semedo Moreira (born October 25, 1974), better known by his stage name Gil Semedo, is a Cape Verdean recording artist, songwriter, businessman, and record producer.
