Don Canney
Donald J. Canney (October 8, 1930 – March 20, 2011) was an American politician and civil engineer who served as the Mayor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for twenty-two years from 1969 to 1992. Canney is Cedar Rapids' longest-serving mayor to date. Biography Early life Canney was born on October 8, 1930, to John and Alice Mickle Canney in Iowa City, Iowa. He served as an underwater demolitions expert within the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Iowa. Canney married Gloria Frau on August 20, 1955, and remained together until her death in 2010. Career Canney served as the Cedar Rapids streets commissioner for more than six years before becoming Mayor of Cedar Rapids in 1969. Canney is credited with spearheading much of modern Cedar Rapids' infrastructure and civic development. Marian Canney
Marian Canney (née Gallagher, Jan. 18, 1921 - Sept. 9, 2019) was a faculty member at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. She was also well known for her visibility as widow of a Korean war soldier, John J. Canney Jr. Early life and education Canney was born Marian Elisabeth Gallagher and lived in Washington, D.C. with her parents and two sisters. She started Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, first graduating from high school in 1938 before continuing on to their junior college and graduating from there in 1940. Canney attended Trinity College before her marriage, then returned to Georgetown University for a graduate degree in theology and philosophy. Seán Canney
Seán Canney (born 6 April 1960) is an Irish Independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway East constituency since 2016. He served as a Minister of State from 2016 to 2017 and again from 2018 to 2020. A native of Belclare, Tuam, County Galway. Canney was campaign manager for his brother-in-law, Paddy McHugh, in the 2002 general election, in which McHugh gained a seat in the Galway East constituency. As an Independent candidate, Canney was elected to Galway County Council in 2004, on his first attempt. He was re-elected in each of the subsequent local elections in 2009 and 2014. In both the 2009 and 2014 elections, he topped the poll in the Tuam local electoral area. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2011 general election in the Galway East constituency, receiving 5,567 first preference votes. Richard Canney
Richard Bright Canney (July 1852 – 17 June 1887) was an English-born cricketer and doctor who practised in New Zealand and Australia. Born in Thanet in Kent, Canney arrived in New Zealand in January 1878. While working as a general practitioner in Wakefield, Canney was selected to captain the Nelson cricket team in its annual first-class match against Wellington in April 1878. He won the toss and, batting in the middle order, scored 7 and 15 – above-average scores in a match in which 40 wickets fell for 297 runs – and Nelson won by 85 runs. It was his only first-class cricket match. He moved to Australia in the early 1880s and practised in Scone and then in Gunnedah, where he was highly regarded for his work among the poorer citizens.
