Callands, Virginia
Callands is an unincorporated community in Pittsylvania County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It was named after Samuel Calland, a native of Scotland that immigrated during the 18th century, whose general store became a popular fixture of the community. The area around the store served as the county seat of Pittsylvania County until the end of 1776. Before the American Revolutionary War, Callands was also the seat of the Antrim Parish, which later became the Camden Parish, of the Virginia colony's established church, the Church of England. Pittsylvania County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 60,501. Chatham is the county seat. Pittsylvania County is included in the Danville, VA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Samuel Calland
Samuel Calland (1750 – Nov. 8, 1808, Callands, Virginia) was born in Scotland, but became an influential landowner and merchant in Colonial Virginia. The town of Callands, Virginia, is named for him. Personal life Born in 1750, Samuel married Elizabeth Smith Calland (1758–1828) on December 14, 1776, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Smith, who owned the large plantation "The Pocket", in a bend of the Smith River. Their children were: Anna B. Calland Callaway (1780–1810); Captain Samuel C. Calland (1787–1818); Ralph Smith Calland (1789–1815); and James Calland (1791–1817). Home The Calland family home had 22 rooms and was situated at the foot of the Turkeycock Mountain. Old Chapel Church
The Old Chapel Church, also known locally as the "Snow Creek Chapel", was built in 1769 as a chapel of ease for the Church of England parish in what is today Penhook, Virginia, United States. Construction The chapel was , a frame house with clapboard roof, a plank floor, with pulpit and desk. There would be a pitch of 12' to the roof. There were to be two doors and five windows, with a small table and benches. A typical chapel in Colonial Virginia was built as a frame church, and the Old Chapel Church has post and beam construction. Penhook is a census-designated place (CDP) in Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The population was 801 at the 2010 census, up from 726 in 2000. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Penhook is located in eastern Franklin County at (37.004501, −79.628747). It is bordered to the east by the Pittsylvania County line and by the Cool Branch arm of Smith Mountain Lake. The northern edge of the CDP is the center of the Blackwater River part of the lake, while the northwestern edge follows the Bull Run arm of the lake and then Bull Run itself upstream to Virginia State Route 40, which runs east–west through the center of the CDP. The southern half of the CDP extends nearly to the Pigg River, an east-flowing tributary of the Roanoke River.
