Cali
Santiago de Cali (), or Cali, is the capital of the Valle del Cauca department, and the most populous city in southwest Colombia, with 2,280,522 residents estimate by National Administrative Department of Statistics, DANE in 2023. The city spans with of urban area, making Cali the second-largest city in the country by area and the List of cities and towns in Colombia, third most populous. As the only major Colombian city with access to the Pacific Coast, Cali is the main urban and economic center in the south of the country, and has one of Colombia's fastest-growing economies. The city was founded on 25 July 1536 by the Spanish explorer Sebastián de Belalcázar. As a sporting center for Colombia, it was the host city for the 1971 Pan American Games. 2021 Junior Pan American Games
The 2021 Junior Pan American Games (Spanish: ''Juegos Panamericanos Junior 2021'') were the first edition of the Junior Pan American Games, an international multi-sports event for athletes aged 17 to 22 in the Americas, organized by Panam Sports. It was held in Cali and Valle, Colombia between November 25 to December 5, 2021. Candidate cities The deadline for the presentation of candidacy to organize the first Junior Pan American Games was January 31, 2019, on which date Cali, Santa Ana, and Monterrey were selected as host city candidates by Panam Sports. Alejandro Eder
Álvaro Alejandro Eder Garcés (born 1 December 1975) is a Colombian politician and specialist in international security policies. He was elected Mayor of Cali in October 2023 and assumed office on 1 January 2024. From 2010 to 2014 he served as Senior Presidential Advisor for Reintegration. World Games
The World Games are an international multi-sport event comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games. They are usually held every four years, one year after a Summer Olympic Games, over the course of 11 days. The World Games are governed by the International World Games Association, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. In the most recent editions, between 25 and 34 sports have been included in the official program. World Games 2013
The 2013 World Games (), the ninth World Games, were an international multi-sport event held in the city of Cali, Colombia, from July 25 to August 4. It is the first edition of the World Games to be held in South America. Host city allocation history The 2013 World Games were initially allocated to the German cities of Duisburg and Düsseldorf. However, at the end of 2008, Duisburg withdrew and Düsseldorf dropped out because both cities could not secure enough funding, partly as a result of the 2008 financial crisis and the subsequent Great Recession. Two alternate cities came forward to the IWGA to bid for these Games: Pretoria, South Africa and Cali, Colombia. El Gato Del Río
El Gato del Río ("The River Cat") is a sculpture by Colombian artist Hernando Tejada. The sculpture was inaugurated on July 3, 1996 and is located on the side of the Cali River in Cali, Colombia. Over time, it has turned into a famous landmark of the city along with the monument to Sebastián de Belalcázar and Cristo Rey. Today the area near the sculpture has turned into a park with cat sculptures by several artists known as the ''Parque El Gato De Tejada'' or the "Cat Park". History In 1996, a plan was created to beautify the banks of the Cali River on the city’s north side. For this project, Tejada donated this sculpture to the city. The sculpture was created in bronze in the studio of Rafael Franco in Bogotá. To transport the sculpture to the city, the roof of the studio had to be removed. ''Cristo Rey'' (English: Christ the King) is a statue 26 meters tall located in the ''Cerro de los Cristales'' (Hill of the Crystals) in the village of Los Andes, west of the city of Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The hill is so named because of the large amount of quartz that could be collected in the surrounding area.
